MPG on 2.5

I now accept my wife's 2.1 saloon returns around 50 mpg, but what about the 2.5? And 2.5 Estate?

What sort of realistic figures could we expect please?

Hi Richard.

All my 2.5s (all estates) have done fractionally either side of 40 mpg. Strangely, the current and newest one I've had is reluctant to average much more than 38.8 (according to the trip comp) and my suspicions lie with the fact it has a cat fitted.
If, however, you tow a meaningful trailer or caravan with them, consumption will increase quite markedly, the mpg declining into the upper 20s.

Largely depends on how you drive. The 2.1 will give 50+ driven gently, using the same ammount of performance should return a similar figure with a 2.5, but when you have the extra performance you are tempted to use it. Your age could influence it somewhat. :D As will where you live and drive and the length of your journeys.

My 50 mpg is derived from living and driving in a rural area, travelling at off peak times when I have to travel elswhere, driving at no more than 60 -70 mph, keeping the revs down below 2000 when not on the motorway and not accelerating or braking hard. If you are young this will probably be to boring but I did all my boy racing when I was - a boy :x

Peter, I like the reference to age. And I thought it was just me feeling too old for snazzy driving.

I'm 58, learned to drive in Central London when traffic was like light through a kaleidoscope. Before I was 18 I lived in Norfolk and learned to drive most farm machines. Like a good many people of similar age, we've done all that and now want to live to milk the pension fund.

I've live in deep in the country and most of my driving is local, off peak, occasionally venturing onto the M11, 50 miles away, to visit family nearer London.

We have been genuinely surprised at the 50 mpg on our 2.1. A 1.9 TD BX returned about 50 mpg driving across Europe, and a later 1.76 TZD BX showed a little over 40 mpg, and that without the performance of the 2.1 But I've got to say, the performance is nice but there aren't that many places within 50 miles of here we can open it up.

It's all a lot different from the 98 2.5 tdi Landrover Discovery we had for a few years. Tried everything but still couldn't get it above 25 mpg! Had to go, in favour of the 2.1 about 3 months ago. Yet, it served a good purpose. One of the two ways out of our village is flooded 15 - 20 times a year, up to a depth on 4 feet, so the Landy did a good job, as well as pulling out cars who's driver hadn't realised the water was so deep!

Other than that, the XM seems like the best move I've made in years.

It's decided now, when funds permit I'll get rid of my last BX and take on another XM. There's a place about 25 miles from us which does just Citroens and he makes a speciality of XM's. It's where we first saw the current 2.1.

After our experiences with the Landrover, even 40 mpg is sweet! And that Estate has so much more space! I also think some of the problems with the Landrover were to do with having a cat fitted, certainly the story I've heard from others.

In 2001 we took our little camper across Central Europe. On the way, near Venice, we met a retired truck driver from Nottingham who had a twin axel caravan, towed with a 2.5. He spent 8 months a year on the road in Europe with that rig, and had just brought it up from Greece because it was too hot! I guess that's where we first took notice of the XM.

You had the wrong one !! All our Landys are petrol, running on gas. Around 14 - 15 mpg, if you don't go mad, which with gas at just on or just over 40p litre gives a very nice equivalent mileage of over 30 mpg --- and, although it's probably against the rules on an XM forum to say so, they do sound a lot nicer than the XM !! (Retires to bunker with tin hat on !)

In general day to day use I got around 32 MPG from the 2.5 Estate I had. However the engine was just up to temperature by the time I reached work.

In the 2.1 manual hatch I used to get around 42 in the same conditions.

Finally in the 2.0 TCT LPG I get about 19 MPG, I have got as low as 16MPG! This engine is warm with the first 2 miles of the journey.

Hi Richard

I worked in central London in '54, I didn't notice then that the traffic was paticularly light, although that was before I started driving. You could park your car in a layby outside the shop though, in Cheapside! :o

I would think Norfolk is good for fuel consumption, its pretty flat, I still get about 50 mpg in the far north of Scotland where it is a bit hilly, but at a considerably reduced speed of course.

I think that the 2.1 Peugeot/Citroen engine was the best IDI engine ever made, the two inlet valves give it incredible low down torque which I am sure is largely responsible for the excellent economy. The hydraulic tappets keep the noise down and make sure the valve clearances are always correct and the redesigned cooling system has virtually elinated the head cracking problem associated with the 1.9.

Used to get 30 around town then moved place of work. Mpg was mid twenties and dropping due to heavy traffic. On a run I could get between 45-50mpg.
2.5td......Now sold.

Hello folks, and I'm sorry, I didn't know all these replies had been posted. Maybe my email programme is chucking the notifications into spam, I'll check now.

Us having a Disco sounds a bit like we've just moved into the country from a city and Disco is the 'must have.' Not so. But there's plenty of people around here for whom that is true. The Disco, barn conversion and a Kennel Club white blaze Border Collie. Not that I'm against any of that, but we're the real thing. Our parish has 100 people in it and 2 of us working and living in the parish (my wife and I) And of my 58 years I've lived in remote places most of that time.

Our Disco was just great, we both loved it. Pulled down a couple of trees with it, after I'd cut the wedge, pulled an Escort out of a ditch one freezing New Year.... it goes on.

Peter, you could park in Cheapside! I first went to Central London (SW7) in 1958 and the traffic was just murder. But I had come from a sleepy Norfolk village which boasted two cars! It had a garage with one pump, mainly for red diesel for tractors! And one metalled road. I hadn't seen a bus until I went to London. I left London after 10 years, having seen most of life! Then spent the intervening years forgetting the life I had seen.

You're right Norfolk is pretty flat, as is Suffolk, where I now live. We have a house on the highest point in Suffolk ( looked at contour maps before we bought the house re: flooding) That's probably why we get 50 mpg on the 2.1. But the Disco never quite made the grade. 20-25 was the best we ever achieved, even on a run from home to Staffordshire. Lovely motor. Just too expensive to run.

We did look at a gas conversion for the Landy, but again, couldn't justify the cost.

The 2.1 is currently the best option. But I am looking at a 2.5 for myself.

Hi Richard

Yep, parking in Cheapside, mind you I was only there for a year and during that time the counsel filled the bay in! But there was still plenty of parking along the road, half of Cheapside had been flattened in the war and they didn't start rebuilding it untill after I left, so there were lots of flat areas which had been buildings you could park on.

Norfolk in those days sounds idylic, the far north of Scotland is still very similar to that now. There is an 'A' road that goes from Lairg to Tongue, it about 40 miles long, has fantastic scenery along its whole length and sometimes you can drive the length of it without passing more than half a dozen cars. About half way along is a village called 'Altnaharah', which doesn't look as though it has changed in 100 years - apart from the cellphone mast! There are petrol and diesel pumps at the side of the road with a notice that says 'For fuel ring bell at hotel'. Its pretty quiet in our part of Dorset, our house didn't have electricity until just before we moved here in 1970, we have spring water and a septic tank, our nearest neighbor is the farm about 1/4 mile away and our nearest big town 30 miles. That's how I like it. :D :D :D
