Hi Guys
Quick off topic request for info, if any of you have done one ---
Pug 306, late-ish one with power steering. On the LH side of the rack there are two gaiters and inbetween them appears to be a metal clamp to which the end of the power ram attaches. What I want to know is whether this clamp secures the outer, smaller gaiter, or it is simply butted up to it ? If it does secure it, how is it removed. Had a look at the official Peugeot workshop manual and it was even worse than a typical Haynes on this topic.. Want to know as I need to change the tie rod and I reckon there's a fair chance of doing it in situ if I can slide the end gaiter out of the way.

Hi Mike
Peugeot ServiceBox shows the two rack large gaiters secured by 2 clips each but the small 'steering protector' appears to be just a push fit over the near side tie rod ball joint. It may fit over the end of the ram collar on the rack but it doesn't appear to be clamped by it.
You have my sympathy as I am also having to get to grips with the maintenance of a 306 owned by my impecuneous son!

Hi Ken.
Thanks for that. Logic suggests the collar must be a pretty good fix onto the rack, so thinking about it, they probably wouldn't have the rubber sandwiched between it and the rack. Was very disappointed in the quality of illustration in the Peugeot parts list and manual I have.

if this setup is the same as the xm that small rubber boot outboard of the ram mount is a push fit, it has a collar with stainless teeth (the same as in an osma gold or speedfit pushfit fittings) that hold it over the ball joint, if your carefull you should be able to prise it off.
The ram mount itself is part of the rack and will not come off, unfortunatly.

Hi Dean
Thanks for the info. As we seem to all have a feeling it's not trapped by the ram collar I don't really mind if I have to butcher it to get it off -- they are only about £7 from Peugeot. Fingers crossed then that there actually is enough room to complete the job in situ.

Just to finish the thread, in case anyone happens on it later, the rubber cover is best accessed from underneath and if you are able to start a thin, strong edge (I used the tip of a small wood chisel) between it and the metal boss, it pops off with very little bother. It doesn't have any teeth or apparent fastening ring, so my guess is there is a thin metal ring bonded within the end of the rubber. Reckon I distorted it fractionally on removal, but nothing to prevent re-use.
