Stop light & ABS light

Post by endorfin » Thu Mar 24, 2011 9:04 pm

I'm still having problems with an intermittant stop light along with the message on the matrix "High water pressure, slow down" but the car is not overheating. Sometimes this light & message stays on for a while & sometimes will just flicker on & off. The temp gauge generally reads at 90c but can go up to 100 when driving at speed on the motorway, I've pulled over to check the coolant and its been at correct levels & cool enough for me to put my fingers in without burning.

The warning light seems to have no relation to water temp, it'll come on when the engine is cold too. I'm thinking maybe a faulty sensor, the ones that screw onto the cooling system, I think there are 2, one with a blue plug & the other green?

Also is it normal to have variable temperature, my other cars would go to 90c and stay at that temperature whether the car was working hard or not but my XM (2.5TD) seems to vary its temp up to 100c depending on my speed and the weather isn't even warm yet.

The ABS light has been stuck on since I got back from abroad leaving it standing for 4 months, I noticed that when I turned engine off whilst I was still rolling on the motorway and switched back on the ABS light stayed off until I came off and it came to a standstill. The ABS still seems to work though even though the light is on and the 'ABS not in use' message is displaying. On starting the car the ABS light blinks once quickly then stays on. Any clues to what it could be? My MOT will be coming up in a couple of months & would light to get it sorted.

Yep....I seem to putting up lots of posts just lately!

Oh & what exactly is the bitron box for? I bought it from the same guy I bought my locks & armrest from as it was the same car as mine, I thought it had something to do with the electric window controls as my driver's door window sometimes has a mind of its own. I press the one touch button to roll down and it would only roll down a bit & would have to press it again or I'd press it to go up & it would only go up a bit, I'd need to roll it all the way down then press up again & if I'm lucky it will go all the way back up. Sometimes needs a few attempts, not exactly ideal at speed on the motorway. I tried changing the boxes over but it made no difference so what could be causing this & whats the bitron box for. All other windows work perfectly.

PS How do I add a signature on here?

Your window most likely just needs the anti-pinch control resetting.
Will look up the instructions and post.

I dont know what temperature the 2.5s run at but 90-100 sounds a bit hot.

My 2.1 ran at over 90, untill I replaced the thermostat and it now runs at about 80.

With regard to the ABS, has the car been on a lexia? To pinpoint the problem I drove around with the lexia on the passenger seat
to read the real time supposed speeds at each wheel during driving. This allowed me to identify a sensor that was incorrectly reading at lower speeds.

2.5TD's should run at 90 except on long uphill tows.
Report what you are doing when the temperature is raised.
If it stays around 90 on fast motoryway type driving, 95 low speed heavy traffic and 100 if left idling for long periods then check the operation of the cooling fans as one or both are not working.

It stays at 90 for idling speed and heavy traffic, goes up to 100 at motorway speeds at approx around 80mph

That suggests a problem with one of the thermostats or blocked rads.
Check the rads for even temperature and feel the hose feeds from the stats.
Watch when you are putting your hands - belts and fans chop fingers.

Both fans are coming on. But they also seem to stay on for a while after the ignition is turned off too, is this normal?

Where are the thermostats located and are they difficult to change on the 2.5, if not I may as well change them as a matter of course. I flushed the radiator last year although I didn't reverse flush it.

I've checked the radiator hoses, top hose is very hot and bottom hose is just warm.

2.5 thermostats are on the front of the engine block.
Roughly the same height as the injection pump but at the other end of the block.
Over-run of 2.5 fans should only happen if aircon is fitted.
On non a/c 2.5's it is a regular cause of dead batteries.
If you have checked the big hoses then the main rads seems right.
The small rad and its stat would be my next suspects.
