LHM Brands

Post by jamieb » Wed Aug 24, 2011 8:43 am

Hi there

Time to change the LHM and I've have noticed a lot of different brands on Amazon and ebay

Comma
Millers
Exol Ultra
Granville

also of course the genuine Citroen stuff.

Is there anything to choose between them? Naturally I'm tempted to go for the cheapest because I'm like that. Equally, I would quite like to do it right.

I was told by a technical rep of one of the larger of those suppliers, that all LHM was made by Total and the different suppliers just bottle it in their own packaging.
The reason is that due to the demand for LHM being low it isn't cost effective developing and blending their own product.

Hi Jamie

Newton abbot is the first one and the one we usually go to, its on the A38 between Exeter and Plymouth. There is another one at Liskeard and the last one in Falmouth. The Newton Abbott one is excellent for a day out, especially if you have kids.

Ah, days out with kids ... I remember them. Alas the kid is now off to university and I'm quietly hoping she'll be taking me out soon. Trago Mills would do, or a nice RAF museum. She can sit in the car and read a paper and I'll scamper around getting over excited.

Thanks for the tip Peter. Off to Trago Mills next week.

An oddity here is when I once bought a gallon can of LHM from our local factors branded as Delphi. Rather than the normal fluorescent neon green like most, it was a lot darker and greener without the neon fluorescence.

Maybe Total make it all but it begins life as a neutral oily sort of colour and the bottlers add their own brew of dye to it?

Total may have the monopoly supply of lubricating and hydraulic oils to Citroen, however most major oil companies offer their own varieties of hydraulic oils. For example aircraft mineral based hydraulic oil has a very similar specification to LHM apart from the requirement to satisfy a much wider operating temperature range and it is ofen dyed red, eg Texaco Aircraft Hydraulic Oil 5606G.
