The auxiliary (the small one) thermostat on my 2.5 had been leaking (you could see dried coolant around the joints) and it was leaking half a litre of water every 1,000 miles or so. I got a new one but when I tried to remove one of the two bolts the top one felt like it would snap if I tried any harder. The top bolt was a different size to the bottom one, someone had forced a wrong sized one through it, even drilling the relevant hole on the stat itself so the bolt would go through it.
Took it to my brother's garage to see if they could get it off. One of the mechanics there tried to get it off but it snapped as expected. Both of the bolts were rusty further in. He was planning to saw it off and then drill it out but as there was something in the way he tried to get it out instead with some clamps but ended up breaking a bit of the head/manifold/block or whatever it is called that the stat bolts onto. I was going to upload a picture but its too dark to take one, will try and take one tomorrow.
He has fitted the new stat with 2 new bolts, even with the corner of the top bolt hole snapped off. He assures me that it will hold without any problems. He also had to drill the top hole on the stat to make it wider to get the larger bolt through which I wasn't pleased about. I've done 500 miles since this was done and there's no leaks but I'm extremely uncomfortable about it and would like to replace this part but no idea what its called.
The other thing is, with the old stat the temp would go up to 95 when working hard, I'd always hoped to the temp would be lower with the new stat but its at 95 most of the time even when not working hard and at 100 when working hard ie motorways. I'm wondering if because he's made the hole larger on the stat this means the stat opening wouldn't be flush on the head so wouldn't be able to open fully. This would only be the case if the aux stat opens outwards not inwards.
I realise the above is probably not very clear but if you've changed an aux stat on a 2.5 I think you'll know what I mean.
Anyway, idea idea what the part I need is called and even better, does anyone have one!
2.5 - what is the bit the aux stat bolts onto? I need one!

Chances are that I will be able to recover a good one from one of the spare engines.
Will let you know.

I did think you would be the first to reply!
Any idea what it's called?
Would be very grateful if I could buy one from you, I could collect it too. Whereabouts are you located, send me a PM if you prefer not to publicise your location.
Cheers
