Damn! Blown pipe. As if life wasn't being difficult already!

Post by andmcit » Sat Jun 23, 2012 6:45 pm

My daily driver and tow car 2.5 Exclusive has the dreaded blown pipe above the rear cross tube.
GSF don't sell the cupro nickel any more and I've always bought the 50 metre rolls there. Anywhere
else sell the pipe as I can flare it and have 50 odd fastening nuts but can't stitch scoch mist in!

It was a bit odd, as I drove this afternoon I thought I could smell LHM and whilst I was pondering that,
noticed the steering felt faintly heavy when the panic warning of hydraulic pressure loss for brakes
flagged up!

Damn!!

Hi Andrew,
Having just had the same problem I've been looking around recently for a coil length of 4.5mm Cunifer pipe and have drawn a blank for a UK source (OK I'm aware that Pleiades and Malcolm Lockwood can sell piecemeal lengths from their stock)

I am considering buying from http://www.franzose.de 2CV specialists who sell a 7.62m roll of 4.5mm pipe for 34.90 euros and a 25m roll for 109.00 euros. A 25m roll of 3.5mm pipe is 89.90 euros.

Do Automec sell metric pipe, they sell the flaring tools?

Automec standard is copper pipe.
Their advert for a full set for a 2.1 XM specifies supplied in copper.
I think standard copper pipe is about 5% down on required spec for the high pressure Citroen pipe work.

I have found the same problems with bulk supply of CuNi pipe.
Everyone says yes but waiting to get the next bulk order supplied.
You just end up waiting, wasting your time to no end result.
In one case I tried face to face, offered cash down and still could not get a reasonably large order placed.
Had not getting from Europe so might be worth trying.
Thanks, Ken, for the idea, link and prices.

At present I am using mainly recovered, not something I would particularly want for the top of a rear subframe.
Still it is one option Andrew.
Roll one of the scrappers onto its side and cut out all the decent length pipe runs.
In my experience most of the pipe is fit to reuse.

It may very well have to come to that John although I prefer the idea of doing the
job properly and right for one and for ever. So ALL the hydrualic cars just been
dumped by EVERY parts supplier - what's the point in having the nuts and seals
still listed by GSF then?? No logic to it.

Whilst it sounds like I'm going to waste my time doing it, I'll try contacting Lockwood's
and Pleiades when they're open tomorrow but expect to be given an indefferent
response then? It looks like I'm going to have to fork out for www.bonapart2cv.com

Nuts and fittings are going off stock next.
As part of my chase around I spoke to one manufacturer.
I was offered bulk stock where currently held.
They did not intend any further production runs on recent years demand.
Generally seems all you can get is stock on hand, then no more.

The best online price I've found from a Cit specialist is 72€ for 25 metres
plus the delivery. I was going to go for this option but just wasn't sure how
long it'd take to get to me.

PlanB was a phone call to Malcolm Lockwood's who happily told me he will
always carry pipe work for all the hydraulic Cits and sells it in 10m lengths.
At £2.50 a metre, it's nothing like the price I last bought a 50m roll from GSF
but needs must and hopefully I'll get the 20m in the post either tomorrow or
Weds as it was promised to go out in the post today.

I guess with everything getting ramped up in price habits in the recent past
of buying double for not much more will have to change! I've only ever
dealt with Lockwood's face to face at Cit rallies or dealt face to face with
local guys so this is all a new departure! lol

I phoned a supplier this morning that used to supply 3.5mm dia. Kunifer pipe in 10 metres lengths, but I'm still awaiting the return call they promised me

If your really struggling to source the 3.5mm dia. pipe there's this OPTION available if you get desperate ?
