Another ABS sensor gone!

Off topic chat about anything you like. Doesn't have to be about XMs (though they will inevitibly come up!). You can even discuss non-Citroens :o in here!

Another ABS sensor gone!

Post by endorfin » Wed Nov 07, 2012 4:58 pm

Seems to be a rate of one a year!

Was driving along yesterday last night and the ABS light came on, with the message in the matrix display reading "ABS out of use"

Which one this time though, I remember doing a resistance test with a multimeter on the ECU plug but can't remember which pins to test, does anyone know?

It's Bendix not Teves, which makes it a bit harder to find one. If anyone knows of one for sale let me know.

It's not the fuse, first thing I checked

I know how to do the multimeter test, found my old posts on the .com forum, will test it at the weekend.

Hopefully it's not a sensor. There's plenty of other things on a Bendix that can bring on the light. I just hope it's not the safety relay or valve block...

Been there, done that and still have the scars

The most likely cause and first thing to check I suggest are the front sensor connections behind the wheels, which tend to corrode and thereby bring up the ABS message! With regards, Matthew T.

Hi endorfin, you know where you're going, do the resistance tests and if any faults here then do check, clean the plug contacts and grease up the connectors. Do the sensor output check by jacking up each corner rotating the wheel and measuring at the same pinouts, looking for 50 plus mv AC. Any fault found on a front sensor then check for any debris/corrosion/crack on sensor tip or reluctor ring. The rear can be difficult, but if impossible to move may be swollen by corrosion and maybe a clue. Hope it's not a sensor, they are well pricey when available.

Tested the pins on the ECU today, snapped a piece of plastic off on the plug! But still seems to go in ok. No reading for the rear nearside sensor.

Jacked up the car, secured it with 3 axle stands (hate going under these XMs!) and found the green connector was unplugged!

Plugged it back it, secured it with a bit of tape and tested the car...warning light now gone! So a happy ending there, could have been expensive :-)

I would have bought that if I'd known, if only to keep it as a spare! :-(

In the description it did not check out fully as a Bendix rear sensor.
Lead rubbers, length, sensor head fixing were all correct.
Plug was grey not green, sensor tip looks different.
Will let you know if it fits and works correctly.
Boxed new item and is seems in current production.
The sad bit for me is that they want over £100 for a Teves sensor.
