S2 facelift is better with some improvements. Most certainly the 2.0 16v hdi 138 and the 2.2 hdi 173 engines. The 1.6s very misunderstood but can be very good if cared for.

I'm a big fan and prefer the mk. 1 facelift 2005 to 08 but don't mind the early cars too..

When the C5 came out my first thought was of disappointment.
My reaction, too, Eddie. After XM came to an end in 2000, we were left with pretty much just Xantia (for one more year) at the more interesting end of Citroen's offerings. When C5 saloon was launched (I was a regular reader of Diesel Car at the time) at least it carried on with evolved Hydractive suspension, but overall looked decidedly uninspiring, and certainly lacking any styling verve. (C5 Estate was something else, in the cavernous tradition.) Later magazine reviews reported it as dependable and competent, and owners becoming attached to it, much the way they might to a favourite settee.

In a conversation with our local Citroen dealer sales, I asked whether the new C5 really was meant to be an XM successor as "top of range". No, was the reply, something better will come along later. Dealer explained that that was the answer they had been asked to provide when that question was raised.

Well, we had a long wait for that - arguably until the arrival of C6. In the interim, full fluid suspension was being killed off, and with C6 even being built on the C5 floorpan. C6 turned into a sales disaster, maybe partly on the back of confused styling. It was disappointing to find top of range Citroen being challenged, in terms of comfort and ride, by much more modestly price kit.

My own view is that S2 XM has never been surpassed by PSA in comfort, roadholding, cabin quality and ambience. It was a brave bit of styling, in a particular market slot, and not everything was got right in 1989. However, by the time S2 rolled off the lines, the problems had been solved, and a fine range of engines were on offer. It's just a shame that Citroen wasn't focussed on XM sales, leaving mostly Citroen afficionados to seek out the last of the cars. XM did sell around a 1/3 million of the cars by the end, roughly the same number as Rover P6. And that, in its day, was regarded as a success.

Have you actually owned a c5..

I didn't like them initially. But then got one..

Firstly.. The crash safety test impressed me.
Second.. The long term spheres appealed to me grately
Third.. I found the ride about the same as my XMs Infact better as half the time the ecu doesn't work or it needs diodes.. Or comfort spheres..
The electric pump is a Great idea in that it can take just a door opening to activate it..
Build quality.. No squeaks or rattles..

Yes the niggles are a few.. Rear arm bearings.. Parking brake cables and guide tubes... Rear calipers.. And heater box's.. But I think its a worthy carry on.. Not to mention the supurb hdi engines that carried the derv flag on..

I noticed most people who aren't keen haven't had one. On fb over the last couple of years I seen people who didn't like them get one and the opinion changed completely..

The Xm and c5 are completely different spectrums but are both top of my heap of cars.. Love them

So there is still more Xm in UK then total UK c6 sales..

Wasn't there just over 600,000 c6 total sold in UK.. Or was that total production..
Approx 23,000 total production for C6, approx 1,000 sold in the UK.

For Q4 - 2019 the figures are 487 taxed, 164 Sorn.

So, there are more C6 than XM in the Uk.

I had a couple of the first C5s, didn't like them much so I ran 406s for 10 years. I now have two C5X7 estates, different as chalk and cheese, superb ride even with steel springs which mine have, very quiet, with the right tyres and of course spacious. The fuel economy of the 16 valve Hdi is also better.

You not had a failed steering rack then or wiper motors or window regulator or heater control panel or heater box although the heater box issue was a mk 1 one also..

ALL those are stupid expensive to recitify..

In the X7 claustrophobia comes to mind too.. Very small inside around the head and as for storage space... That's shocking...

I have a leaking steering rack on one but the leak is very slight and a I carry a can of LDS round just in case, the extra lubrication makes the steering very light so I like that. It does also have intermittent wipers but I can't fault the motors and if I disconnect and reconnect the battery - with the appropriate timing, they work fine again.

The other one which has all the bells and whistles has had no real function problems but I did replace the thermostat which was a pig of a job but fine now. The only other problem which took me by surprise was the seat recliner, I reclined it and it wouldn't come up again! Just a faulty switch but you have to remove the seat to get at it.

I will forgive them these problems as they are such a lovely car to drive, the suspension is better at low speeds and sharp bumps that the hydro! Most of the problems seem to be with the hydro suspension and auto boxes that's why I got the manual. Not driven another modern car with such a good ride.

They will quite likely see me out.

Only 48 605s sold in Australia - they were all PRV V6 automatics. I've got one registered, and one for parts, although I keep the parts one under cover, as it's body is very straight.

Both are Series II, (as is the one in the photo of course). I've had the registered one for 11 years, over which time it's covered 130,000 km. It is a dark metallic grey, and when my youngest son first found it in the garage, he asked "Why is there a battleship in the garage?".

My wife doesn't like the look of it, but agrees it is a very comfortable long distance cruiser. I can only hope that the Xm that I bought last year will turn out to be as reliable.

Cheers

Alec
