In response to the recent post by Vince I have dug out some shots of my parents 1967 R4 that we took all over the UK in the early 1970's and also the Datsun 120Y we had whilst living in NZ between 1975-1977. The second shot of the Renault shows the marine ply 'topbox' my Dad made with fishing rods strapped alongside and as we lived near Colchester at the time we must have covered some miles!! We bought the Datsun brand new and I have since read that the 120Y was a huge seller and played a key role in launching Japanese cars. Regards, Matthew T.

Brilliant idea Matthew, great photos. the Datsun 120Y was a strong seller in this country mainly on the basis, it would start first time every time, whilst BL stuff might not.....

Well you've seen the Renault 21 in another thread my Parents had. Need to find pics of 1979 VW Passat, 1981 Audi 80, Fiat 128, VW Beetle. That is their total car history! This could be a challenge..particularly the Fiat.

My grandparents had some interesting cars. First mk1 Golf in Cheltenham...Beetles and splitty camper. Then they moved onto Mitsubishis, less said about those the better!!!
My other grandparents had a Mazda 1300, never knew it existed until I saw a photo and a Renault 14, which was replaced with a 306.

The other car I remember from my earlier childhood was a Rover 70/75? and I think we had the 'cyclops' one with the extra headlight. Our later cars included 1974 Saab 96, 1971 VW Beetle, 1984 Saab 900, and a Lada Riva!! Best regards, Matthew T.

Back in the 70's, my Mum nearly bought an old Rover..something like a 75 or 90....Not sure which... of some friends of my Grandparents. In the end she bought my Grandparents Beetle. I actually remember it and remember the day they bought the Passat too. I was only 3!

My great uncle was a massive Saab fan. He had 96's estates and saloons. He became so well known for having them, he had owners giving him them in the end. He was given the very first 99 imported into the UK. It had a plague on the dash. Unfortunately he didn't want it, but oddly no one was interested in it. No idea what happened..probably scrapped. Shame.

I'll try and find some pics of the cars. The Fiat will be difficult. I have never actually seen a picture of the car. The others will be somewhere!

It is fascinating what people buy and why. Lada Riva sounds an interesting choice after such a solid selection of cars. But it did at least start life as a Fiat.

My first Rover - a 1935 "10" and my last - a 1975 3500S, complete with 5-speed ZF box (from an SD1) And, in between, a few others between my Dad and myself...
1947 "Sports 16", black
1956 "90" (P4), lovet green
1960 "3-litre" (P5), city grey
1966 "2000" (P6), zircon blue
1972 "2000TC" (P6), cameron green
1975 "3500S" (P6B), lunar grey

And then, Citroen struck . . .

That is a real historic motor Chris and you certainly were a Rover buff!! My Dad's 900 had to be scrapped due to rot in the end Russ despite a great deal of welding over the years and the Riva was a cheap and cheerful solution that served us for few years!! Here is a shot of a similar Rover to the one we had in the 1960s! It just occurs to me that our children will not have much to reminisce about when they review 'car history' in future years, Citroen XM...Citroen XM...Citroen XM...!!! Regards, Matthew T.

I think that was the Rover my Mum wanted to buy. It was black with red leather apparently.

Ha!, strange. Must have been a popular colour combo though.

Mum and Dad had a Datsun 120y. It was a S reg, which they bought in 1980. Brilliant car, unfortunately met an untimely end under the wheels of a truck.
