Thanks Gents, you all cheered me up, I think it could well be a twisted French conspiracy - they've never forgiven us for Agincourt ;)

The problem seems to be the fuel solenoid, current was getting to it but no go until I gave it a "little" tap with a long screwdriver and a FBH, it now starts (and stops) fine. Do you reckon it's about to give up the ghost or just a coincidence after my pump replacement debacle a couple of days ago :shock:

There's definitely something in this.

I made the mistake, one day last year, of bragging I had an XM with everything working. Big mistake! The very next day it haemorrhaged green life blood out of the most inaccessible pipe. It's currently sitting quietly awaiting 2 new rear silencers.

I'm sure it's ECU is connected to my wireless network. ;)

It's probably just coincidence, but running a shot of injector cleaner through the fuel system might free if off if it's gummed up.
