Morning chaps.

So, here's where we stand. The car is with my Dad's local guy. He's happy to do the rebuild but Dad's not so sure on sourcing the struts from Latvia. He'd feel better obtaining replacement parts from a UK based supplier. (Purhaps he worries shipping will be prohibitively expensive?).

So, are there any UK strut supplier / rebuilders? Or can the guys on here that have used the Latvian struts make some positive noises for me to show him? And maybe a rough idea of turn around time because I'm guessing it's an exchange/send over your exsisting struts type situation?

I think Dad's up for saving it, if it's straight forward enough.

Taa
Rob.

Hi Rob

No UK rebuilders.

First you need to find out the strut head type.
Get the parallel section of the strut rod measured with calipers.
That determines the top taper size in the strut head.
That part of the rod is easily accessed in the failed state.
If it measures 23mm you have a thin rod, if it measures 25mm you have a thick rod.
Rod and head have to match you cannot mix sizes.
Strut heads are also handed and you need a drivers side one.
I think I still have the the last of the prototype Kingas ones somewhere in the shed.
They were Drivers side thick rod ones.
I also probably have some servicable used both thick and thin rod ones to select a decent one from.
Send me a PM if interested.
Some years ago I sent batches over for rebuilding but now will only do so for my own use
I would want the old one back for rebuilding stock.

Hopefully John's kind offer will be of help.

I have a pair of the Elastomer.eu rebuilt units, from Latvia. Cost (early 2017) was €90+vat apiece, on an exchange basis, plus €30 return postage for a pair (to Spain, in my case), package tracked. Send them your old units, and the same or identical ones with new polymer, will come back. Turnaround on mine was two weeks.

This is their website, with details and photos of repaired strut tops:
https://elastomer.eu/index.php/en/citroen-strut-mounts
Contact them for an up-to-date price. English no problem.

I know Latvia is far off, but it is part of the EU, and a the company have been very responsive in getting these parts (for XM and Xantia) rebuilt to a good standard. We are not aware of any failures of these rebuilt parts in service.

Hope all goes well with the rescue. Let us know how you get on.

The car looks set to be repaired. The bonnet offer will be accepted once logistics are sorted and Dad is happier about sourcing the up rated struts.

I'm trying to persuade him that if the paints being mixed now is the perfect time to re-fit a series 2 nose cone.. That'll be a stretch though.

Definitely S1, I can still remember the RP number of that car, 6107 - produced 29th July 1993. It had a S2 nosecone fitted at some point - I assume it had a smack in the front as one of the headlights also looked much newer. The 24v wheels were fitted after I sold it - before that it had set of original S1 alloys however I believe the car came fitted with pressed steel wheels.
