Car essay

Hi:
I´m putting together a set of essays on saloon cars of the period 1960-1980-something. So far I have six contributors, all from the CAR magazine forum. Three essays have been completed. I wonder if this is something some of you might like to get involved in. I can´t remember if I already asked about this. I put this project to one side several months ago to work on something else which is now completed. During this lull I may have forgotten a few details like who the heck I wrote to.

The brief is this: 6,000-7000 words on the subect of an important saloon, not necessarily a Citroen. It might be an imporant failure or an important success. Or just interesting. The article needs to be backed up by references to period books or magazine reviews. I´ve bought old magazines from e-bay. This is a way to avoid Martin Buckley-style handwaving where he just says what he thinks with no other supporting views.. So far the cars under consideration are the Peugeot 604, Lancia Gamma, Rover P6, 1979 Mercedes S-class and Alfa Romeo Giulia (60s model) and an un-named Antipodean saloon. The essays cover more than just the performance and technical data. The context of the car and its social significance are also relevant. I can send a copy of my 604 essay if you want a model to consider. There is no specific deadline, something medium term. I know people have other things to do besides speculative tracts of car journalism

The project hasn´t been sent out to any publishers. Payment (if there ever is any!) would be the advance and royalties divided by the number of contributors. For the moment, you´d have to write it because you really thought it was an interesting line of inquiry. I can´t offer any advance until someone else decides the venture is viable.

If you have any questions, let me know.

Regards,

Richard

An essay proposal would be welcome. The XM is, alas, out of contention. The DS, GS and CX are allowable. It would be a brave writer who took on a car with legendary reputation of the DS and the long production career of the CX. It´s why I didn´t do them. I chose the 604 because it was overlooked.

The Peugeot, Matra, chrysler renault espace would be a VERY interesting one...

That has a very complex early development before being produced, as hinted above...

It was Geoff Matthews ( then went to Citroen) at Talbot who came up with the Espace and then as you know Paul, it all went wrong and Renault bought the design.
Very interesting history there, quite agree.
