Hi guys,

To do the inner cv boot on a 2.1 manual xm, what tools are needed...

My brother in law is a commercial mechanic and will be doing the job on friday whilst im at work, however i need to provide the tools etc to get the job done.

Im presume ill need gear box oil as its a wet joint isnt it? ie it will pour out when you pull the drive shaft out. I have the boot kit naturally, but will a fork type ball joint splitter be the right thing to use?

Could someone post up a quick checklist of whats needed to do the job please

Large socket to undo the drive shaft nut, I think its about 34mm but not sure and a long bar - its tight, I use a 3/4" drive socket set. A balljoint separator as you mentioned, a fork type will do but you have to be careful not to damage the boot, a screw one is better.

You say the inner CV joint, if you mean the one at the inner end of the shaft, that does not require any force to separate it as only the boot holds it together, if you mean the joint behind the wheel you will need a fairly heavy hammer and a drift to knock the joint off the shaft as its held on with a snap ring.

If it is the inner one I think you have to take the outer one off anyway to slide the boot over the shaft, I can't really remember, the last inner one I did was on a CX.

well Peter as Vince says his brother in law is a commercial mechanic, i think he will have long bars ,
and a half inch drive for a commercial mechanic is the equivalent to a 1/4 drive of a car mechanic, 1/2 inch = 3/4 and 3/4 - 1"

Vince you will also need the diff oil seal for that side

Sorry, didn't notice the 'commercial mechanic' bit. Yet another senior moment.

No problem Pete he has fallen through in a big way....he has issues going on at the moment and i cant see him seeing the promises through...so its back to just me

The joint gaitor issue is likely to be a garage job for me to arrange. I know enough people in the trade so Im thinking of arranging a trade off with a customer of mine....

If he could do the work needed and MOT the XM for me (he has an MOT station, then he has a Ferrari i could detail for him...Hmmm interesting idea that

Your socket Vince is 13/8 just checked.
If you buy an original gaiter from citroen which I did not long ago, do not opt for the plastic version. And don't go for the cheap ones that are easily put on with a cone, they do not last long in my experience.
