There's a lot of chat about replacing them..how do you know when they are on the way out? Can they be refurbished?

We really don't NEED to start another thread on 'Strut tops' as its all been covered in many previous threads such as THIS-ONE which includes the links you need, and if you've still have not had your fill, you can always use the search facility by searching for KINGAS (oh, I've saved you the bother) !

I see XMX has taken pity on you.
Strut tops "on the way out" can be seen from the drivers seat as the bonnet will crease up into view as a little hillock or two.
