Newb question...Engine swap

Post by davetherave » Fri Sep 18, 2009 2:27 pm

I have a hypothetical question, shoot me down if its just to absurd.
Is it possible to transplant a diesel engine into a petrol xm?
Thanks!

It's certainly do able, if a good bit of work, but something of a high prat about factor, and you will be stung by the insurance company when you're done if you confess (which you should).

Much easier to sell the petrol car and buy one with a proper engine instead

Damn! I was hoping insurance wouldnt be much of an issue as it would be a standard XM engine.
Problem is there are no diesels (saloon) about!
Maybe im just too impatient!

I'm thinking that I'll likely have a saloon and estate diesel available - a s2 2.1 MANUAL estate VSX in
green that needs a clutch fitting and an early maroon saloon s1 with a clutch that wasn't fitted
correctly by the previous owner!!

There's no hurry and they're not going anywhere (in all meanings of the phrase) but will probably
have to go some time due to the fact that for the first time in years I'm going to rationalise what
I've got in my collection... :?

Biggest hassle, is what're they worth!?

Hi Dave.

Not done the swap myself on an XM, but have on a couple of other cars and it always turns out to be vastly more work than anticipated, usually with countless little differences you don't foresee. I'd say the only practical way with an XM is to have the complete donor vehicle to go at. Bottom line is that if you have some patience the one you fancy will eventually come around. Good luck with whichever way you jump !

Hi Dave

I have contemplated this myself as it seemed to be the only way I was going to get a silver one but you really need a complete donor car for those little bits you had not thought of. There must be one or two still out there but they are getting in short supply.
