The weekend before last I took a flight up to the northern part of Sweden and then drove my "new" XM home, a short 1300 km journey

It went mostly well. Had some problems with a fuse going off whenever the ACC was set to auto. Seems to be related to the AC compressor. I set the ACC to eco mode and the fuse held.

About 10 km from home a whining noise appeared. Seems to be coming from AC compressor, the belt driving it, or thereabout and sounds like a worn out bearing. I keep my fingers crossed that it is some part that is easy to obtain (and not the water pump)

Anyway, my "new" XM is currently parked as home, waiting for transport to a workshop (I don't dare running it until I know what's broken).

Do you need AC in Sweden?

Yes, summers are quite warm and winters in the southern part are quite wet and sometimes very cold.

Or do you mean if I need it as in compressors are hard to find too?

I had a compressor bearing go dry, it made a terrible noise. I'd try squirting some WD40 or similar directly at it and see if the noise dies away briefly.

Good show, I'm surviving without an AC just back from hot France. Missed it at times to be honest but glad something less, to go wrong with. I've noticed many many new cars with open windows during hot weather so that, gave me some hope as I find modern (not talking XM's) AC's are always too cold or too un comfy.

My aircon on the mandarin car is freezing, very efficient system.. Almost too cold infact!

I don't use my AC, in the xm i am driving prefer to open the window, Any way mjoelner I have a complete AC set and still fully charged in the XM that i am breaking up for parts its mark 1.6 td, its here if you need it or parts from it, just let us know

The aircon doesn't work on either of mine - rarely gets hot enough in this country to need it.

Oooh Peter !, it serves not just too cool, it dehumidifies, quickly - quicker than the windscreen selection - clearing condensation from your breath on the glass on sub zero winter mornings, assuming your flap servo's and fan are working correctly. Bear in mind though, with climate control in auto, the a/c will switch off below 5degsC so has to be manually selected. The LEXIA is a good way to exercise the flap servo's.
The recommended 2 year service period is essential for long term reliability and performance, not an expensive service either.
