Guys today i learnt a couple of things about xm's that i wasnt aware of...perhaps uninteresting to some?....but to me i like learning new information about xm's

Will somewhat sheepishly informed us of the very subtle differences between the side repeater lenses on very early cars and later S1s where they contain 100% lens and do not have the black backing to them...Id never have noticed that Will but i will now :) Have you ever spotted that?...

Also on the very early models the bumper plastics and side mouldings were a dark gray rather than the black..again a very subtle difference you wouldnt always notice....

What other subtle differences exist? Tweeks and tucks in the design i suppose as the model developed...

Another more obvious one is the dash instruments having dark backgrounds on S1s which changed to light grey on S2.

On S1 the dash is always lit if the ignition is on, on S2 this was changed to only happen when the headlights were on - a shame, might have to do some rewiring on mine

I love the shape of the S1 repeaters, the S2's are horrible in comparison, lifted straight from the Xantia.

I do like the clear lenses on lighter coloured S2s mind you.

Other subtle things are the fact that the petrol and temperature gauges traded places between S1 and S2, and the complete deletion of the oil level gauge from very late S2s, and the reorganisation of the temperature and fuel gauges, with a 'Citroen' logo providing a bland looking blanking space in between them.

Then there's the fact that very late S2s lack the pillar vents for rear seat passengers.

I do love how cars are improved by accountants as the years go on!

I also find the differences between the early S1 interesting Vince and you have included the two main items of which I was aware. My 1989 lhd V6 has no indicator repeaters at all, although the wiring is there, while the slam panel relays and petrol cap are all bright red!! The 89 car also no removable front wheel arch liner plugs to access the bumper fixings and the paint code is completely hidden under the airbox. With regards, Matthew T.

ROOF TRIM! VERY VERY different and uniqe! This is due to a different style of sunroof fitted to them, but the roof console and roof liner is completely different from later H reg cars onwards!

Ask Eddie Nuff about this one!! If any one knows, he does!

The steering wheel has a Red badge and TOTAL rear window sticker on early cars, black on slightly later ones.

Early strut tops are straight sided, slightly later ones are stepped.

V6 and TD's with ME5T gear boxes produced before RP No. 4970 may suffer from gear lever vibration when under load or accelerating.
Caused by the 3 selector rods.
Modified rods with insulated joints fitted from this date.
Retro fit on customer complaint only.

TD's up to RP No. 4991 were fitted with large diameter 115mm drive pulleys.
This could cause over pressure and pipe rupture in service.
Small diameter 100mm pulleys became standard.
Retro fit earlier cars on pipe failure.
Listed dia is over belt ridges. Pulley outer edges is 7mm larger for both types.

Very early strut heads had only 4 inner construction dimples.
Service failures of these were common.
Replace with later 10 dimple any you find immediately.
Follow the rules on early strut rod compatibility when doing this.
As I remember new head old strut is not permitted.

Rear hydractive suspension changes on early cars.
Some old components cannot be replaced with later ones.

Trivial difference I noted between my 1989 Si and 1990 SEi are that the overhead lamp console changed form but not function. And on the 1989 car the Citroen badge on the steering wheel was red while the 1990 was a sombre black.

Did the later car have a sunroof?

I think he's getting at the same point that Paul mentioned about the difference in the roof lining on the very early cars. The interior light is smaller but runs deeper back to the sunroof which is set farther back and is wider. The whole lot is completely different. (I wish they'd just left it without a sunroof).

The light fitting you have is the one fitted to non-sunroof cars Neil, right through the end of production. With regards, Matthew T.
