Engine overhaul or replace?

Hi my 97 2.0 petrol auto turbo engine is using oil and water and down on power. Considering an overhaul or sourcing a replacement. Parts seem hard to come by for these engines, in particular oversize pistons! I suppose I could try a new set of rings? A diesel conversion might be a possibility. I don't want to scrap this car. Opinions appreciated.

Can you be a bit more specific about how much oil and water are being used? Is the oil in the coolant or water in the sump?
I was under the impression that those engines never wear out, other than an occasional head gasket or turbo failure.

Some times its better to replace engine if you have little time on your hands and other cases its better to rebuild with this you will learn more, if you see what i mean

Hi sorry for the delay. I'm near Northwich but off in Mauritius getting married at the mo! 3 day Party in full swing. Back to the car - mayo in header tank, breathing heavily, goes from max to min on dipstick in 1500 miles, loosing coolant steadily. I'll come and get that block if it is available.

Let me see if I can seperate the auto box.. if not then you can take the box and the block..

the auto box is no good to me. However. Its not a dodgy box.. it a bloody good box with no gear slippage or anything.

Surely, it just wants a head gasket?
