Malaga to Arran & Islay

Post by White Exec » Sun Oct 26, 2014 1:19 pm

Big birthday celebration in the family next year, so we've decided to roll the birthday bash and my long-felt need to go and visit Scotland again into one.

So, we'll be driving the XM the 1000km from here to Santander, Britanny Ferries to Portsmouth, then 500mi up to the Western Highlands, and an exploration of Arran and Islay, which we haven't done before. A week up there, and then back to Hampshire for the B.B.B.

Really looking forward to it all. Sort of journey the XM hasn't done in a while - getting through six tanks of fuel, that is - and was absolutely built to do.

Ferry booked, underside waxed, piggy-bank dusted off. :P

Well, I'll be on the lookout- I bet there haven't been any XM on Arran for a while. :)
My parents live there- I can tell you that much of the roads were in a dire state a few years back, but recently there has been a fair amount of repair/renewal done. I am planning to take mine over before the end of the year...

I've been to Islay three times in the last 2 years and love it.

The first two were work related, the 3rd was a personal trip as I really enjoyed the work trips and took my other half over for a long weekend.

The roads on Islay were awful the first time I was there but again were getting a lot of attention the 2nd time.

No-one's ever offered me the loan of a kilt before, Paul, but there has to be a first time... Did actually wear one for a family wedding a while back - amazingly heavy things!

So, both Islands have lousy roads. Never mind, there are still a few months left for a bit of sprucing up. Much the same as down here, then, with unmade mountain tracks which we use all the time. Just as well the suspension's in good shape...

This sounds like an excellent trip. Be interested as to how you find the ferry as I was thinking of going the other way.
I'd be poor and drunk if I went to Islay.
