1 in 12 XMs are stolen in the US

Post by Dean » Sat Jun 13, 2015 9:12 pm

So it would seem
My Father-in-Law sent his 1993 XM to a work-at-home mechanic last year up in Wurtsboro, New York. Unfortunately, the mechanic died during the time at which he was ordering parts and performing labor. The XM “disappeared” from his home garage.

We’ve tried taking the family to court, but his widow successfully claimed under oath that she does not know where the car went. The XM has been registered as stolen with the local police department.

The XM was uninsured (since it was not registered), so this is a total loss for my Father-in-Law – who is an eighty year old air force Veteran with an appreciation for Citroens.

XMs are pretty rare, so can you please keep an eye out within the Citroen community – especially up in the Sullivan County area?

Any leads/sightings? Please send them to me directly or in the comments below. Up-votes are appreciated as well.

Details: Model: 1993 Citroen XM; 4door sedan

Color: Green

License plate European: OB RP114

Vin #: VF7Y4NZ0001NZ4820

Car was last seen in Wurtsboro, New York.

Thank you
Seems a bit of a strange car to pinch given they are so rare over there, wouldn't it be embarrassing if it was just parked in the shed out the way.

It seems a bit odd that the mechanic has no legal responsibility simply due to the car being unregistered.

At least it's a series 2... Phew...

1993 S2...?
Green...?
Doesn't really square with what's in the photo.
Confused.

There you go, not stolen at all, they are just looking for the wrong car.

1993 is probably just a mistake, probably the date was hand written and the 8 looked like a 3.

Being diesel, it's quite an interesting spec to have imported to the USA.

But, from all the information available, it wasn't "imported", as it was still on German registration, and probably probably impossible to get US registration for (unless the declaration of 1993 manufacture maybe opened a loophole?).

"1 in 12 XMs are stolen in the US"
I wonder if it's the same one every time?

You can import classics over 25, but claiming it's a 1993 wouldn't therefore be much use. That's the usual reason for a bit of VIN bodgery in the US.

It is possible the import issue is a bit of a red herring.
Particularly if the XM arrived from Germany in a container with USAF markings and wings.
