It's quite a challenge. Bearing in mind how much careful research and circuit checking needs to be done just to remedy electrical faults where all the correct wiring is actually present, this is a whole different ball-game in terms of detail and complexity, and wiring and component choice.

Do-able, but maybe, as said, simpler to "facelift" an appropriate S2 into a S1, if that's an aim. A very personal choice.

I am sorry to put a damper on things chaps, but to make things easier why not just buy the XM with the spec you want in the first place, given that most models are currently still available! If the hybrid S1/esj is really necessary the interior swap seems the better option. In the case of James Noble I understand he wanted the appearance of a S124v while his other half insisted on an auto! Regards, Matthew T.

We all know an esj is not a prv 24v and they dont go as well as each other (prv quicker) or make the same noises (prv has better noise) .. but series two sound insulation between cabin and engine bay is better and they are a more refind car..
I THINK id also go down the dash conversion route and stick an S1 hatch on...

That's what I would do. It's proven to work and has got to be much simpler.

If the other route was taken, I would think it would be easier to treat it like a full strip down restoration and rebuild the car up from scratch. That way you know the wiring is right. Extremely time consuming and expensive of course.

I think that's what I was trying to say as well. Whatever you chose to acquire, it'd surely provide you with no shortage of things to sort, tweak and puzzle over. That much is guaranteed.
