Further parts secured -photos added!

Post by MTXM » Wed Nov 09, 2016 8:14 pm

I recently made one final visit to Richard near Ely and completely removed the front and rear sub-frames from the scrap 1991 V6 that is an exercise I have not done before! It was necessary to detach the front wish-bones and both then fitted in the boot with a few other last bits. I have not yet found a part of an XM that does not squeeze into the back of a saloon! Regards, Matthew T. PS. I will keep trying to post up some photos of my spoil as the website is not co-operating at present.

Ive got 4 rear subframes here. 3 of complete with siezed R clips in the strutsm i want to get them stripped down but just cannot get the R clips out so need to fathem out another way of getting the arms off the frames.

I think the way forward is to prehaps dosconnect the anti roll bar.. and let the arm swing down as far as possible and "Break Out" the strut piston ram from the end cap... seperating them.. to get them stripped down..

I did this on a C5 and replaced a ram and managed to pop it back in with some force. ..

I thought you might have some subframes stashed away Paul and you never know what might be needed! For me it was partly the challenge of removal and I have limited space for storage! In this case fortunately the rear struts were quite easily detached as a separate operation as I did not initially plan to go go further! Regards, Matthew T.

Getting the rear subframe was definitely a wise idea. Well done!

Thanks Russ and the condition of both subframes is not too bad for the age. The removal also proved quite easy really and not very much is left of the car after four successive visits! This was definitely the furthest I have been with scrapping an XM, partly thanks to Richard's forbearance! I know on the Scotland car a replacement rear subframe might be required at some future date. With regards, Matthew T.

Luckilly 24v rear subframes are box standard but fronts are unique with the centre sphere bracket on the front also meaning unique front strut pipes... the centre spheres moved to allow for the "Straight Out" stainless manifold the 24v prv beasts have..

So that's 24v and 2.5 that have modified front subframes then?

There were 6 variants of the front subframe for the XM by 1991.
In the main the differences were small welded items not the fixings.
Some further variants in later production but nothing that would defeat one off welding and modification.
For Rear subframes there were two variants for Mk1 XM's (car and estates).
With the Mk2 XM Citroen standardised and used Estate subframes for cars as well as estates.

Oh blimey, more variations to be wary of. Interesting about the mk2 using estate subframes for all models.

The difference with estate subframes is the size of the rear trailing arm bearing holder. Estates are larger to accept a larger and stronger bearing to cope with the heavier loading an estate is expected and rated to cope with.
