On ours, on the underside surface of the outrigger, about 4cm in from the sill, there is a small plastic stopper - it looks like a 6mm pop-rivet at first glance, and has a small hole in its centre. This gives (? drainage) and entry to the outrigger section. Could easily be missed, if it's been undersealed over.

Nice warm weather for waxing up in Scotland at the moment!

Thanks. Yes ideal instead of sitting the wax gun cartridge in hot water then wrapping in foil bubble wrap to help keep warm.

Reading this thread I’ve gone and got myself an endoscope on eBay for 12 quid. Using the access points I’m going to have a poke around. Wish me luck. I was wondering is this just preventative advice or could it literally stop the rot if it’s already there?

Look forward to the footage/shots.
On our S2 there is also a plastic plug into the rear end of the sill section, at the front of the wheel arch. Might not be there on S1?

I was using a slightly different endoscope on one of the XM's earlier in the week.
Mine has a small screen so avoiding needing the bit more bulky laptop.
Mine was bought mainly for sill inspections but this check was a bit more mundane.
I was replacing a heater matrix and needed to know the heater box was clear to accept the new matrix.
Turned out the old plastic matrix end cap was still in side stuck firmly to the end of the heater box.

If there is surface rust and you use a rust killing treatment, it will either stop or significantly slow down any further rusting.

Be aware, AFAIK, Waxoyl doesn't contain any rust killing additive, so if that is the product of choice, add some "rust preventative oil".

The bung exists on series 1 sills, but the access it affords is unlikely to be complete. it would be best to remove the inner plastic trims and look through th eholes and bungs on the inner sill.
It may be possible to see enough through the sill cover plastic retainers, after prising them out of the sill top.

Now that rang bells, John.
When I replaced our matrix (a year or so ago) with a new Nissens one, the new matrix would not slot all the way in.
The old one came out without any plastic end cap, so I assumed the new one should not have one either!
So removed the new one's end cap, and in it went.
Didn't think to look into the depths...
Maybe the new matrix just 'acquired' the original one...

Will,
IIRC, the sills are 'double compartment', with a longitudinal vertical panel.
Could be that the rear bung hole only allows access/view of the ?? outer ?? half, and you're right that the other half needs accessing (for rustproofing) via the interior cover trim. Can't recall off-hand.

I used to spray the inside on mine with oil first because it 'creeps' and gets into the seams where the rust starts, then I used to spray the waxoil in, yes I do have a compressor.

In the current temperatures waxoil tend to set without flowing to far although when its really hot it will melt and flow out. Summer is the best time to do it but now is better than never. I have also mixed Waxoil and new engine oil as bit of a compromise.

For the sills being compartmented, I'm not sure which side the rear bung gives access to.
I make up a mix of waxoyl, old engine and gear oil, rust preventative oil...Millers and Bult-Hamber.
After removing the seats, side trims, kickplates and door pin switches, spray it in from all entry points allowing it to run out of the drainage slots. The door harness cable entry is a good point of entry into the A pillar.
Waxoyl is a wax barrier, so you can just make it from paraffin wax or just candles and white spirit.
Make sure you have plenty of catcher receptacles and some polyethene sheeting down.

I've found a new access point near the rear of the sill ;) it's quite easy to spot on mine. Other than this superficially from a bit of tapping they seem sound all the way round apart from here where the rust has come through. This particular jackpoint was more deformed and rusting than the others which all look fine. A bit of a poke around inside this new access point showed the rust to be fairly limited to just this spot and & seems treatable. The rest looks good as new on the inside. Why here? There's the big bung visible which is the other side of the access point mentioned, so confirms it's on the later Series 1.5s. I'll get the wheel off and get a better look from that side all the way along.

Treatment wise I guess I'll wire brush of as much of the rust from the underside and then get some rust treatment in through the hole, spray some waxoyl in and then patch it up in the usual manner.
