It must be. It's also had a new headgasket. Changing that is an interesting job.

Those suitcase engines are a real pain to work on. They have to be dropped out of the bottom for any significant work, due to being nearly horizontal.

They showed what had to happen in the mag. The whole front subframe including suspension was removed I think. Quite a task.

In a strange sort of thinking, an XM might have benefitted from a suitcase engine configuration, as at least the front of the car can be removed to get to the head. But I expect the front overhang would have been even more epic, not least the whole lot more complex!

Luckily the head was recently changed, however it does appear to be leaking oil from the rocker cover... on the underside

The engine can easily be lifted out the top rather than removing the subframe. These were considered complicated at the time since the engine had to be removed to do a head gasket but this was due to the fact that mechanics were used to relatively simple Ford and BMC engine setups. Compared to modern stuff working on a 104 is simple and rewarding.

The little 104 is still with me, running a lot better now so I treated it to a polish

It came up so good I took it along to a local weekly classic car meet where it received a lot of attention!
