I think used the Peugeot 505 rear axle. Which is kind of derived form the 504. No wonder it looked so narrow.

Just realised xm24v on here has a Tagora V6, pics on page 5 of his 24v death rattle post in petrol engine tech.

Another plausible explanation is that the rear axle was designed narrow so that spats could be fitted over the rear wheels, and the suspension never redesigned when the spats were deleted.

Interesting thought.

I expect it was most likely down to cost and what was available off the shelf.

It was designed with a wider track, but Peugeot fitted the 505 rear subframe and suspension as a cost saving exercise. The original design appeared more in liine with a Maserati Bi-turbo.
