PRV V6 article!

Post by MTXM » Wed Dec 28, 2016 3:07 pm

I had intended to mention before now that I chanced across an interesting article in the January 2017 edition of 'Classics Monthly'. There is a six page appraisal of the PRV engine, including many facts unknown to me at least. I understand there was a twin-carb version in the R30 and a twin-turbo and 24v Safrane! The engine was also fitted in early Lagunas up to 1999. Regards, Matthew T.

I've just read up about the ill fated Talbot Tagora , which used the PRV6 with tripple carbs to produce 163bhp.

The Tagora install was the most powerfull of the 2.6s of that eira .. but the only carb install.. the pug 604 and late r30 and even pug 505 were all injection.

Not sure the safrane had the prv 24.. im sure they only had the 12v as renault only ever used the prv 12v. Im sure it was psa exclusivily that 24v'd the heads.. however i was aware the mk.1 laguna and equivalent espace used the prv to 99..

There was an italian marque that used the prv too despite having italian v6 access.. wasnt it the large lancia ??

I have also just got better informed on the Tagora and here is a good resume of the tale:

The interior has a little bit of the XM and not least the single spoke wheel!

The article reference to a possible 24v Safrane was a little ambiguous Paul but I think I read correctly and the Lancia Thema also had the PRV 12v. Regards, Matthew T.

In 1988 at Le Mans a Peugeot with one of their production based racing V6 engines set the record speed on the Mulsanne straight of 405 km/hr.
They were competing with Mercedes in the race and one of their cars wasn't doing so well so a couple of their engineers decided to sacrifice it for the speed record. They taped off all the cooling ducts to make it more aerodynamic and managed to get a record speed out of it before the engine overheated.
Shortly after a chicane was put in for safety reasons resulting in today's maximum speeds of around 370 km/hr which is unlikely to be bettered.

Lancia Thema did have the PRV, must look up the Thesis and kappa see what they had.
Interesting about the Laguna.

I do like the Tagora for some reason. The dash is surprisingly modern, very Citroen. I like the two tone steering wheel, carrying the dash colour on to the single spoke. Little details!

The dashboard lacked any finishing and the exterior was close to a boring disaster. It really needed the wider track to "butch" it up a bit. It reminds me ak a Hyundai Stellar.

The track definitely needed widening. But I like the minimal design of both the interior, (maybe not the most brilliantly built, but it had a certain style) and exterior. Slightly Audi 80 like infact. Probably why I like it.

Rumour is that the Tagora had its own suspension design but was forced to use Peugeot parts bin after PSA bought Chrysler, hence the oddly narrow rear track. 2.6 PRV sounds awesome with 2 triple choke carbs, maybe my XM needs throttle bodies to achieve the same effect!
