Simplex ignition switches can have a mechanical problem that causes electrical ones.
The back of the switch part has a small squarish metal projection that fits into the plastic rotating electrical switch.
This is all held together with a metal slide. That slide is held firm by a single T10 Torx screw on the outer edge of the lock case.
You can see none of this as it is all encased in a steel tube part of the steering column.
That little Torx screw often comes loose. In this state the switching can loose its accuracy of contact change over.
It is possible to release the ignition switch and ease it just enough from the steel tube to tighten the Torx screw.
I will not publish release details here but can provide them by PM.

Using a wiring diagram it is possible to check out switch operation but that does always deal with intermittent switch contact problems.
Plugging in a known good ignition switch is a much more positive check.

Torx screw on ignition was fine... I loosened it then tightened again just to be sure. Still no change: interior Lights not turning off when engine switched off... Central locking not working when dimmer kicks in... Hmmmm

Not having found a solution I've decided to dig deeper. As I have a replacement digital dash I'm going to replace that but just wondering about the two little wires that go from the digital display to what seems like the Speedo... Is there a way to unplug them without taking out the Speedo unit? Thanks

On my journey through nether reaches of the car I notice a difference between my car and the supposedly identical donor car... Its a little black box in the footwell on passenger side... One has it and the other doesn't... See pics... Is it something to do with cruise control maybe?

Which black box, the one at the top or at the bottom?

The one at the bottom. The upper one is the air direction flap motor.

The bottom one looks like an alarm control unit.
