Average economy or better?

Post by JK99 » Mon Mar 19, 2018 11:02 am

Just returned from a trip London-Land's End-London, and a bit of meandering around Cornwall, in my Citroen XM TD 2.5 Estate.
Total mileage: 692miles. Total cost: £90.
I marvelled how cheap this was, but maybe it's just par for the course?

That is typical of a 2.5 with engine in good order.
I estimate you did about 500 miles of main road driving with the XM running reasonably close to optimum speed.

It depends largely on how you drive it, diesels thrive on a light throttle as it means a weak mixture and I would suspect that's how you have been driving it. I ran 2.1 estates for 15 years and a lot of miles and they would always do 50 mpg plus on a long run but I don't drive hard or fast, I usually poodle along with the lorries in the slow lane. 800 miles on a tank was about the norm for the 2.1 which is probably the best IDI engine ever made, doesn't have the 'go' of the 2.5 but is capable of excellent mpg.

I run Peugeot Hdi's now they are a little better on fuel, 60 mpg being attainable but they are not as smooth as the Citroen IDI's

I think you're right on that estimate. We drove along the M4 to Bristol and then along the M5 to Exeter at the legal speed limit of 70mph+10% + 3mph extra, ie around 80mph where possible. The heavy diesel usage came on the interminable hills and valleys of Cornwall. In fact, the engine got so fed up with them that on 2 occasions it told us "Stop. Very high water temperature", although the temperature guage itself stayed at normal (around 90) and there was enough water in the radiator.

The estate is also manual, so I suppose that helps with the economy.

On our 2.5, local urban/motorway/rural/mountain driving returns 32-34mpg; long-distance touring and prolonged fast cruising gives 43-44. If we went more gently on the latter, might be able to get 48-ish.

Just in the middle of a trek to France, so we've covered 2000+ miles in the last seven days.

Impressive mileage. Zut alors! So the car is sipping on diesel during the day, and you're sipping on wine during the evenings? Bonne route!
