LH Door mirror visibility on RHD car

Post by ul9601 » Mon Jan 14, 2019 9:12 am

Hi,
Is it me (probably, as I have short legs and I pull my seats right up) or LH door mirror (on RHD car) partially obscured by A pillar?
I haven't tried with the seat fully backed up but my old GSA also had a similar issue (but much worse - about 1/2 of it was obscured and it was essentially useless. Seat position didn't make any difference on that one).
Cheers.

There are two mirror sizes for the Mk 1 XM door rear view mirrors.
Early cars got small mirrors.
Later Mk 1's got full glass large mirrors.
This was done in the same mirror shell as the earlier cars had a black plastic surround insert to match the smaller glass.

No Mk 1 XM's here so cannot check if early type can easily be upgraded to large glass.
I think I know where there are a pair of recovered late Mk 1 mirrors and spare glasses in the storage unit.
Will look them out and see what that tells me.

I would be keen to know the result of this John, as my car has the smaller glass with the black insert.

Yes they can. It is literally just a "frame" that you can take out and fit the larger glass in

You will still have A pillar in the way though..

So it's not just me then...
I wasn't sure but the mirrors (especially LH one because it is partially obscured by A pillar I guess) seemed narrower than they should be...
Do LHD cars have the same issue with RH mirror or is it just the matter of half-baked one-size-fits-all design philosophy by Citroen?

It's the mk 1 design of the angle of the screen and having the mirror right against its body.

Mk. 2 Y4 cars addressed this problem and they extended the body of the mirror so it Sat further away from the car and the ful mirror glass was in full drivers view.

If you fit S2 mirrors to an S1 car which they will fit you also need to change the scuttle tril end pieces as they are shaped differently.

Removal of the insert is a single screw.
Larger mirror glass is about 15mm wider.

Paul has not got it quite right in the post above.
S1 door mirror brackets are of identical dimensions for each side and no variation made between LHD and RHD.
You will need to use Mk 1 scuttle end caps even if you fit Mk 2 mirrors.
The difference here is the shape of front curve pressed into the car wing.
S2 non drivers side door mirrors are extended but not outward.
The fixing to the car body is elongated and has the mirror pivot moved back by about 30mm.
So Mk 2 mirror sets are not mirror images.

I have a pair of Mk 1 mirror bodies in grey with both large and small heated mirror glasses.
There is also a Mk 1 black scuttle end cap.
They are now in the way so will not be here long.
