Quick test for even compression across all four is to crank a warm engine, but not allow it to start (no code, or disconnect stop solenoid). You'll hear each compression stroke, and all four should sound the same, with no 'acceleration' between strokes.

Oil is easy.. Think of the days back in the 80s when following any old escort or fiesta.. They all burnt oil and smelt strong....
