It would just be to fall in line with other manufacturers. S and SE trims were pretty universal accross many UK supplied cars.

They do this so the correct combination of equipment and trims is supplied each time, otherwise each sales order would have to pick from a myriad of options.
This is known as being bundled.

Yeah, Special edition comes to mind but I can't find it anywhere.

Looking at terms generally, it could mean Special Edition, Sport Edition or Special Equipment. D can also mean Deluxe. So working that out, it could mean either on the British market. It could mean Special Edition Deluxe. I would plump though for Special Edition DIesel. It does have Sport suspension of course.
Does the Sport mode suspension work in tandem with the auto gears as on other models?

xmeclusive has already given the trim levels. SE does not mean Special Edition. The only special edition S1 cars were the run out Premier and Prestige, which were leather seated base models.

Trim levels were:
Base (no designation), either carburettor or injected petrol engines. Thus either no badge or "i".
S level, either petrol injected, Si, or diesel powered SD.
SE level, either petrol Sei, or diesel SeD.

The only other formal S1 trim level, excluding the two special editions already mentioned, was V6-24.

Mmm... equipment on my SED is power seats, mirrors and sunroof. Electronics all Inc heating controls and all windows. Turbo, Not heated seats though I understand even exclusive was an option for those. I do have all leather seats though, and power arm rest for some reason! The suspension is mechanical of course but it has either auto and sport, so it must be partly hydractive.

All UK spec Xm have Hydractive suspension.

The spec you list is normal for an SeD.

Base cars = manual mirrors, heater controls, rear windows, no left hand active display and cloth seats,
S = Electric mirrors, all windows, 13th window, electric seats, automatic rotary heating controls, front foglamps, high spec cloth seating.
SE = Leather seats + steering wheel, digital heating control + A/c.. In addition, alloy wheels, ABS were standard instead of cost options.

Book says it was a pay extra option on level 3 vehicles only, not available on level 1 & 2 trim vehicles.
Even if it is fitted it often no longer works as the wires in the seat cushions break easily.
In more recent years there has been a lot of seat swapping in XM's usually to fit leather.
Black leather heated seats were much more common in Mk 1 petrol XM's with seat recovery as the vehicles went to scrap.
