They can be.. BUT this is what I found out. I was going to do this but when I came to put the pump on the lucas pump shaft is smaller then the bosch so it doesn't fit the pully... So I was snookered.. Couldn't get the car up.. To get the Aux belt off to get the idler wheel and bracket away to get the belt cover off etc...
There's a bit more work involved but its not impossible

After listening to you someone put me in touch with an Xm specialist not far from me. Very helpful, told me what he thought it was and how to easily correct it. Apparently when the cam belt and water pump has been changed which this one has a year ago it may be only slightly out and the pump timing will suffer and billow out white smoke of unburnt fuel. The bolts on the pump need loosening and you turn the pump left or right until the timing is right by leaving the engine running while you re doing it, it should put it right because the Bosch pumps are extremely unlikely to go wrong. I l let you know how it goes but at least I have a local knowledgeable mechanic who I can turn to, be also has other CX s and Xm s for sale!

Well guys we ve worked in CEO this morning and moved the pumped having loosened it to put the timing right and the engine is running sweet and not smoking, we re just waiting to start from stone cold but very hopeful. It does seem like the engine may be hard worked as old as it is and we may get a little smoke as often with diesels this age and use but it seems she may have a !of of life off in her yet. Phase one maybe complete but a long way to go. At the moment I need to ask why the electronic heating controls won't let cold air in, is it an electrical fault and what usually goes wrong and how do you get into it? I also need a lot of parts but firstly a new auto gear stick knob, anyone help? Cheers.

It was good to hear you are making progress Richard and is it Wolsey House just outside Diss that gave assistance? With regards, Matthew T.

Auto gear levers in very short supply..

I've a shed and a half stuffed of Xm mostly mk. 1 stuff.. So ask away for anything..

Heating.. There's a servo motor box on each side of the heater box. One heat and flow direction.. Cannot remember which way.. Have a feeling heat is drivers side.. Remove the side trims on the side of the heater box and look upward of the parking brake pedal in released pisition. The motors are held in by 2x screws. They have a fly lead with white plug..

There was a thread here not long ago on auto gear levers/handles.
ZX auto handles the same, iirc.
