One consideration of sourcing your own parts, as opposed to allowing the Citroen/other workshop chosen for the job to provide them, is in the event that the job is not successful - i.e. results in failure within weeks or months of the job. If one of the parts that you have provided fails, you'd have a hard job in arguing your case. I think this is a real concern for cambelt/kit replacement, where a failure could have catastrophic results. Other operations are obviously less risky. All a matter of weighing up that risk.

Workshop repair work done by main dealers (and others) will carry a guarantee, and that will cover both the parts and labour provided. However, if the parts are not provided by the company, then they will not warrant them.

Good points. But that said, it all depends on the dealers, or mechanics - if you are dealing with the ones with "integrity" - hard to find these days - then they are more likely to honour any warranty work. I've had problems with unscrupulous dealer trying to charge for the work I specifically told NOT to do. The best case scenario is to do work DIY for low value obscure model like mine as if you wanted to take all the jobs to mechanic, you'll be paying 5-10 times the actual value of the car easy.

Hi there
also in NZ -but mechanically illiterate-its time to do the cambelt and waterpump on my late 93 2.i CT -and to reduce costs thought I would buy parts myself - would appreciate it if someone could confirm that the parts on the link are the correct ones [pretty sure but double checking] for my xm.

I looked at it once - yes I was put off by the price so haven't tried yet.
