Hi Paul

Do not read to much into the above except for the RPO numbers.
I think Citroen had a habit of publishing the UK documents a bit after the cars arrived.

In respect of the V6 engines there was at least a 6 month gap between the last PRV XM and the first ES9J4 XM.
Also the V6 PRV engine numbers are likely to be all over the place because of the factory rebuilding program.
Very few failed engines were rebuilt by dealers in car.
Once the magnitude of the failure rate was recognised factory engines were supplied on request for the dealer to fit to a failed car.
The failed units were then sent back to the factory for rebuilding.
The initial batch of replacement engines supplied were new ones from factory stock.
Then the rebuilt engines became available and were supplied as replacements presumably with the odd new one to keep up with need.
That would have led to a considerable amount of engine number changes.

The original Hydractive suspension was still under development when the XM was launched.
Lots of changes to the design and components in production cars over the first year from French XM launch.
Then Citroen redesigned the whole system to launch as Hydractive II which went as a production system to XM and Xantia at much the same time.

It will be interesting to match up the sales brochures against the workshop manual document list.
I also have a full set of XM owners manuals which show how things changed during production.
Those last items I have scanned but the files are so large files I cannot load them on here.

Keep coming with the documented detail, John.
Thinking I'd like to create a timeline chart, dates/RPOs going down the page, with a few columns - engines, boxes, suspension, ECUs, etc.
The evolutions could then be dropped into the appropriate slot, along with the Source.
The really big events could be suitably highlighted.

Update:
John has today helpfully added (above) a large number of evolution references from Citroen's documentation.
Am putting this into the timechart.

The timechart project has (like everything else) evolved as it goes on.

Plan now is to produce two separate items:
- 'Milestones' timechart of significant XM evolutionary events
- An index to Citroen workshop/info documents, which detail changes to the cars, or technical versions.

John is contributing massively to this, but all contributions are very welcome. Just add anything useful here.

As in differences and changes both externally and under the skin..

I know the hard way with TD cars there was a lot of harness changes sometime between S1 1991 and S1 1993. I suspect the changes were applied when Citroen changed from H1a to H1b or was it straight to H2 with front and rear centre spheres..? There was also a hydraulic line change at the rear too at possibly the same time..

Yes, do, Paul. Worth doing.
Once you've posted the details, a link to it can get included in the index/list of changes.
Aiming to provide a Source (link) reference to each item.
