I went in my everyday 2.0ltr black S1 Auto, which was put back on the road 3 years ago after being in storage for 21years! Plus, I was hoping to take my Emerald Green 24v that had just gone through its first MOT in 16years. (Adie Pease of DS fame was my second driver)

However, the 24v unfortunately broke down 3 miles into the journey! :x The failure turned out to be that I had run out of fuel (slightly embarrassing)... Diagnostics wasn't helped though by a faulty fuel gauge reading a 1/4 of a tank, (that had be repaired a couple of days previously) and an MOT station that told me that they had put 20ltrs of fuel in it..... It was more like 10ltrs.
Nice recovery on the 2.0 auto after a 21 year layup, though be careful now you have the 24v. One Xm is possible, but two seems to be an impossible number, they breed.

For the 24v fuel gauge issue check the base of the tank hasn't been pressed upwards when it was sitting about, then empty it before resetting the float arm.
Perhaps the garage thought 20 litres was 1/3 of a tank or more, its 1/4.
20 litres will equate to about 100 miles, or two hours of idling and running, less on a newly running engine.
The economy does improve somewhat as the engine beds in and seats the rings, but don't be tempted to leave home without a bank card on you...

Hats off to both Citjon and Oku2 for resurrecting their Xm's...all early S1...

Evening All,

XM's certainly have become a bit of a drug! Luckily (or unfortunately) I am spinning many car plates at the moment. Currently I have seven vehicles on the road, all old and quite time greedy. However the more you have you less strain you put on the rest of the fleet!! :)

Attached (hopefully) is a picture or two of MTXM's 24V and my 2.0ltr after the National at around 23:30 at night!!

Poor Matthew's fuel pump failed on the way back from the National luckily near the A14 services at Newmarket.

The AA were particularly useless so Matthew gave me a ring, naturally being and XM owner I have several fuel pumps (one of which seems to be a communal pump between Sageman, MTXM and me!) so I drove off to help Matthew out.

Luckily the services were 1/2 hr away and the job was done very quickly. (Could this be an XM rally, owner challenge one day?? ;)))

I needed a fill up so Matthew took these photos. Very poorly these are the only photos I have of the event!!

Afraid it's not possible to directly upload photos (or any attachments) to the forum at the moment.
You'll need to put the photos on an external image hosting site, and post a link to them here.
This is an annoying on-going forum fault, which we hope will get sorted before too long.

Good to hear that you met up with Matthew. He's much missed here!

Thank you White Exec.

I had and inkling that might be the case.

I have put the photos into my photobucket account and I can post a link.

Lets see if that works

If not, I may have to come back to this in a weeks time as I am off to Frinton for a week with a family!!

Thanks Dieselman,

I did have three XMs! A very rotten (in the sills, front to back) Mreg Onyx CT which I ended up using for spare parts on the 2.0ltr.

Regarding the fuel gauge issue... There seems to be two different wiring setups for the gauge at the pump end I have seen, one as a potentiometer where all three wires are used and one as a variable resistor, effectively a two wire setup where the Grnd and wiper are combined.

The 24v seems to work with the the latter set up not the three wire... which was fitted in the pump shuffle arounds and hence gave a spurious reading!!

So hey presto I got it working only for it to fail again... I hadn't clipped the sender in all the way so it fell out and was free floating in the tank  ... I was rushing the job... anyway all is now working again!!

I can only imagine I mis-heard the garage and it was £20 instead of 20ltrs... so 13ltrs, which is closer to the mileage I had got to.
