I would tend to agree with your observations Paul,

But hey, for us S2 owners can we also include the PR ES9 V6 as well please :D

Now if only Citroen had made a diesel V6 for the XM and Xantia...

Well Citroen didn't, but whats stopping someone with too much spare time in putting a 2.7 HDi in an XM!!  :o  :D

Now that WOULD be a nice car, even with a 2,oi 8v HDi 110bhp( With a tuning box)... would be nice too...

...I've chatted to a mechanic mate of mine and he reckons he can put a Xantia HDi engine in a CX. That would be nice. 8-)

I'm not convinced about an HDi in an XM or CX. There is a reason that PSA and Mercedes stuck with indirect diesel engines for so long.

Technology or COST - thats all!!

VAG's early TDi engines in the 1991 Audi TDi or Golfs are VERY noisy!! Like the Montego... so they took longer to develop the Second Generation Direct Injection stuff and make a better job of it..... which I reckon they did!

...except the DTR T2 engine was rubbish (they were automatically replaced by Citroen) as they suffered from porous block issues - the blocks were cast from rubbish quality metal in India. Admittedly most will be sorted nowadays and the engine number should have a plate stamped on bearing the words "Echange Standard".

The Series 1 Diesel was fine, however! :D

Tell me again why petrol is better?
Because your Other car is slightly bigger than a 1998cc Turbocharged capacity isnt it Will, it also has more than 4 cylinders and 8 valves, even in these days like for like petrol will destroy the derv, economy is the only factor in the dervs favour.

and on the HDI front i must agree too, although my reasons are poor, the HDI is a strong refined lump but they dont sound right, too much rattle, i guess to my untrained ear they just sound fragile, the Indirect is ever so slightly more noisy at idle but its an almost nice strong sound................yes im weird. I also dont really see much benifit from the 2ltr HDI over a nice 2.1 not enough to justify the electrics and all the other rubbish a good derv should not have.

That's a long way from reality. Any decent diesel car will be quicker in general driving than a petrol powered equivalent, because the engine produces more torque.

My car may have a big engine, but weighs considerably more than an Acvtiva and has the slush box and old inefficient engine, but still manages considerably better mpg.

Converting fuel energy into motive force is key to performance.

The Activa is a funny old thing where fuel economy is concerned. Around town it's rubbish - low 20s. Take it on a fast A road or Motorway jaunt but going easy on the loud pedal and you can see high 30s.

Running mine between Newport Pagnell and March this weekend (good A roads) saw very good economy.

Once I ran an Activa from here to Dover and back, all motorway and an unbelievably clear M25, and achieved an honest average of 39mpg...

That's not bad and not hanging about either really although all speed limits were closely adhered to.

I regularly see 37mpg now on a clear run to Somerset and back, a journey I do regularly in either the Activa or one or other of the V6s. The V6s return about 35 on that run.

What's your other car then Will?

2.1 TD all the way chaps !!!  I'm turning into PeterN :D Well, he likes to use his left leg and arm whilst driving

The 2.1 Turbo SD with the Lucas pump has the nicest XUD thrum, sounds superb. I don't want electronics on my car if I can get away with not having them there. Even the 2.5 and the lucas epic 2.1s have electronics that they could be doing without!
