FIAT have introduced a number of technical innovations later used across the whole motor industry. Common rail diesel injection being one case.

In my experience, FIAT mechanicals are tough and the cars reliable until bodged by mechanics.
Which can't be said for the Mid-engined Fiat X 1/9 which my other half (At the time) had which regularly broke down or would not start due to fuelling/evaporation problems of the carb which was blamed for lack of cooling in the engine bay in hot weather which apparently was a common problem with X 1/9's

In the end, the easiest fix was to part-exchange it for some thing else, which she did for a MK1 Honda Prelude now there's a name synonymous with quality/reliability 'Honda' 8-)

Nothing but praise for FIAT in the Smith household. Between us ( my parents and myself ) we've had four Uno's, two Tipo's a Regatta, a Panda and a Cinquecento. Never had any significant problems with any of them.

The only reason we stopped buying them was that our local FIAT dealer switched franchise to Nissan.

My parents had a bright yellow 128 in the 70's. Great car when it worked.

Other than that, the only significant engine issue I have heard of with fiats is a head gasket failure on the second generation Punto.

I have a bit of a soft spot for the very very early Stradas. Mad looking things!

Hi All,
This does sound rather interesting and by coincidence I hope to have my 1991 V624v back on the road shortly. The event is also not too far from us! I shall message the organiser and if there are no other takers I would be happy to assist.
With regards,

ha ha - the punto has just died with hgf!

Great engines though and Janette loves her Punto - finding it difficult to replace though!
