Seems the gearbox or linkages are duff. Not sure what problem the seller is meaning about the steering though.

It's actually not a bad car - it has lots of potential. If you recall I did a fair bit of work to the engine so a lot of bad bits are already done.. Nice interior as well.

Looks like it's edging close to the motorshow in the sky!! needs saving!

All new spheres, rebuilt height correctors, brake disks etc, head gasket, timing belt and water pump, thermostat, housing, injector looms, rebuilt intake manifold, most engine sensors all replaced and tested when I had it less than 2 years ago so I doubt it has any problems in those departments.

Hydractive I and all working when it left me. Does have noisy CV joints unless they were seen to. Fuel computer doesn't function due to fault in the 'black box' controller under the dashboard. All electrics worked too when it left me. It's a rare manual turbo and quite lively to drive.

:D

This car also gave me much pleasure over a number of years with only relatively minor repaired needed. It is sad to see it being passed on yet again and for a mere £350!! Hopefully a real enthusiast will purchase the car, carry out the necessary work and keep and cherish it! As pointed out by Graham, it is also very unusual being a manual and an attractive and rare colour too. Regards, Matthew T.

Hmmm tempting to convert to diesel and then use the turbo on this tct customer car.. lol... hehe..

It's only in Oxfordshire too. Oooooeeer!

So what's the consensus, duff box or just dodgy linkages? And does it share the same box with 2.1 manuals?

I thought it might be tempting Russ being so local and in the colour of your old car and you may even have the replacement front wing! My guess is that worn gearbox linkages are the problem as the changes were a little sloppy in my time! I would also expect the gearbox ratios would be different between the diesel and petrol engines. The car would certainly make a nice pair with your contemporary diesel auto!! With regards, Matthew T.

I also thought it was the same box between the 2.1TD and TCT petrol, however as Matthew points out, the ratios are bound to be different between pertol and diesel, aren't they? :? :?:

I have had that gear issue on the 2.0 SEI N/A engine, and that was just sloppy linkages. I have also had it on a 2.1, and that turned out to be the box itself (it later failed completely), very rare I understand, but not impossible.

More than likely the linkages Russ. You could always go and have a look at it for yourself, it will be obvious if the linkages are slack from play in the shifter and notchiness trying to get it into gear. Plus you can also physically examine them. Quite common for the rubber bushes to fail and the whole shebang then becomes loose and unable to push the selector rod on the gearbox fully / properly enough to select certain gears.

I thought the TCT used the BE3 gearbox, the same as the 2.0 petrols.

That's interesting if it's just the linkages. I expect you're right, if it is the same box, it might have different ratios.

It would be very strange owning another one in that colour. I need a driveway!

I really hope not, haven't had the best of experiences with the BE3, having lost 5th twice in them, and that was just on a 2.0 N/A petrol... :S

I'm sure it does use the BE3, which as you say are slightly less strong than a decent cheese.
