I'm sure it does use the BE3, which as you say are slightly less strong than a decent cheese.
According to Mr Haynes the non-turbo 2.0i has the BE3 box and the turbo 2.0i has the ME5T, which is also fitted in the 2.1 turbo. Regards, Matthew T.

The turbo does use the ME5T and never used the BE3 and i would guess the final drive ratio was changed and the actual gear ratios stayed the same but that is just my own theory, need to check the facts.

I was surprised to find the V6 and 2.0i use the same ratio's and final drive, no wonder the poor 2.0 is so sedate, its gearing is too tall.

I can confirm too the tct uses the me5 box and not the be3... 2.0i n/a was the only car along with 2.2 n/a diesel (not in uk) ..

The be3 max power handling is around 100bhp long term so the stronger me5 box is used....

Hi guys,
I'm trying to shift the car.... regarding the linkages, this was advertised as a problem when I brought it, I didn't mind much as I figured I could easily (?!) replace the whole box if needed. I took it to a couple of garages who all said the whole gearbox and linkage needed replacing. I'm not entirely convinced either (got the impression none of the places I went to wanted anything to do with the car!) though one of them was the regional Citroen main dealer...

In any case, I was able to find potential replacement gearboxes, but not linkages to go with it, and ended up never getting anywhere... (was in need of a 2nd car so had to get something else eventually, draining the budget for repairs, plus was fed up by then after months of hunting). I was considering taking it to a gearbox specialist eventually (up in Banbury) who do these kinda gearboxes but I've kind of run out of time and there are a whole bunch of other problems rearing their head too. Specifically, the idle is awful (was bad when I got it, and in the history I see it's a problem that's been going on a while) making the car basically undriveable (especially with the gearbox fault added on). Also it is blowing huge clouds of smoke. Big time.

I picked up a couple of guys asking to buy for parts on C&C which I said I wanted to avoid, had a buyer come along, tried to fit a proper pipe for the hydraulics (it had a 'garden hose' between the reservoir and regulator that was leaking everywhere, which I also assumed was responsible for making the steering heavy). Unfortunately having done this we were unable to get the hydraulics to regain pressure, so the car is sat dead by the road...
I was still tempted to get it towed to see if we could regain the hydraulics, but he said if the head gasket was gone (hence the smoke) he wouldn't be interested in buying. And I couldn't really justify getting that fixed on top of everything else if it was the case either.

Soooo... this is kinda a last call for the car I guess :? it just has too many mechanical things going wrong for it for me to deal with myself now (did I mention the ABS is light is also on), no support from local garages, and there is nowhere for me to put it. On the other hand the chassis and most of the interior etc is in excellent condition (I did sell the front seats to the would be buyer who also swapped the grill for his rather more peeled one!)... and I kinda told myself on buying that 'no way would I see it broke'... argh... any takes for a bargin basement clearout?! (certainly less than £350)? I can't keep it where it is much longer....

Hello Oxford XM, I might just be interested. I'm looking for a donor chassis to make an electric XM, so the engine problems aren't a problem for me. Does the car have no front seats as of now? Cheers!

Hi there,
had to reregister, forgotten password & reset doesn't work...

yes it has seats, swapped out his front seats for them (also leather, but rather more tired - probably not the worst you'll ever see though)
he's also come back for the central console and some switches though (windows etc). & is eyeing up the bonnett and strut tops...
I tried to pass the car on to Chevronics (to keep it alive) but they've said it's too far for them to come (as did other Citroen specifics dotted around London).

Has no MOT, parked on a public road and the council are on my butt now - called yesterday, I assured them it'd be gone soon! If you want it then it'll need to go by the weekend or early next week at the latest so let me know ASAP. Yours (or anyone elses, if you don't want it after all) for the cost of the recovery only

That is very sad indeed to hear the likely fate of my old XM that I purchased for very little on ebay and brought back to a good condition. The 2.0i turbo with a manual box is quite a rare beast and it appears there will now be one less on the road! It was also in a very nice and unusual colour. Regards, Matthew T.

I took a notion to search for this XM again and quite sad to find it (probably) dead now if this last post was back in February.. I bet all that was wrong with it was the fuel pump pressure. Virtually everything else was new on that engine. Smoke out the back could be a duff turbo - doubt it's the cylinder head as it was fully pressure tested and torqued down with a new set of bolts even though the old ones were still the right length. If it was scrapped I hope the new, expensive bits were rescued: coil pack was new, genuine Bosch air bleed unit, steering pinion (that was days of work), catalyst, lambda sensor..... I'm sobbing. R.I.P 'Vader'. I ran out of steam with this one but with a little effort from someone else it could have been great again. Not to mention all of the LEDs I soldered into all of the seat and window switches... that was weeks of work!

Ah well, I'm off XMs now but it would have been nice if it had lasted more than 3 years!
