I don't think that age is the main factor. In France, where rust had not taken older cars off the road, the number of XMs and Xantias that you see on the roads has plummeted since about 2013, which coincides with the time that many regularly used spare parts became NFP.

BMWs and Mercs of the 1980 and 90s have not done the same dissappearing act.
