To be sure of a long life, ensure you fit the strut the correct way up.
The body should be uppermost and the thinner rod facing down.
This allows the oil to lubricate the seal, if the wrong way up the seal leaks and the gas escapes.

Thanks for the advice.

Meanwhile I'm changing out the front door speakers. Sorry for the newbie question but I am kind of unsure how to proceed. I removed the 4 screws on speaker and it doesn't seem to move anywhere. Don't want to apply too much force before i'm sure how exactly it is supposed to come out. I assume I don't have to remove the whole door card for that.

Should be just the four peripheral screws.
You might have to lever out with a flat-bladed screwdriver; metal surround of the old speaker may have stuck to the surface underneath.
Be careful when putting the new ones in not to twist or distort the speaker frame - needs to sit flat, without stress.
