After a lot of "home" delays and a 90th birthday......the cylinder head is off the spare engine.

That head looks fine, but check for flatness before committing to fit it.
I would lap the valves in even if it doesn't require machining.

Keep that old head gasket with the block as it shows the thickness is three hole.
On Xud engines, the head gasket thickness is a result of piston protrusion, not the cylinder head, which is flat.

Ordered:

New Cy'ldr bolts
3 & 4 notch HG's (4 notch was cheap so will cover me if a skim is needed)
Complete engine rebuild gasket set including new valve stem seals
Intake manifold joining "tubes/cuff's"

Washing/degreasing/jet wash flushing today

Technically you don't need to fit a thicker gasket if skimming, as the head is flat. The gasket thickness is to allow for different piston protrusion, which doesn't change when skimming.
I can't see the compression ratio changing much unless the head is skimmed very deeply.

What thickness gasket is fitted to the original engine?

Clean now....the cam shaft is MUCH better in the spare engine.
just one broken/stuck glow plug and a stud to drill out of the head :(

Next, remove the head in the car and check for any piston top damage. If there is then it is an engine swap and the Xantia will get the chop to provide it (as it is a known mileage car and the engine is oil/water tight and smooth as well as being the same later model so less likely to throw up and surprises when swapping over.

After I see the pistons in the (in car) old engine I will sent this head off for a skim if I need to use it.

how come you have an open valve with no cam shaft on the head..?

Just removed the spring/collets on one to check valve stem condition/seat that is all.............(and test a method of removal without a spring compressor)
