Speedo transmission cable, XM 2.0i 8v 1990 and self introduction

Hello everyone, I'm Anxo.
I bought this XM as a first car (yep) since it was very nice and really cheap, but ever since I've been doing nothing but acknowledging why everyone told me that it was going to be a tricky thing to operate, not because it is a bad car, but because it is old and "rare", especially here in Spain.

The latest of my quests so far is trying to find a spare lower speedo cable (the one that connects the transmission and the upper cable in the hood), for the left hand drive 2.0i 8v 1990 Grand Luxe XM. The original part reference is 961 665 54. I've been told by some distributors that there is no record of anywhere in my counrty selling these. However, there is this one online, https://www.buycarparts.co.uk/seim/9825619, but I don't know if it will work despite being really similar to mine (note that mine is 450 mm long, and that one is 470, but that shouldn't make any difference, right?). The rest of the tacho shafts appearing in that website don't seem to match, since the have male-male ends. Any advice would be really appreciated, because I need this limo working for my graduation in a week

That is the early type, male/female type with the sensor mounted on the gearbox, which will be more difficult to locate, due to rarity.

Find a local speedometer cable supplier to make one up for you.

There's one listed here:
https://www.onlinecarparts.co.uk/car-br ... cBvPonp1ZU
SIEM 500450
Shows the correct Citroen part number. Check with them that it's male-female.

And welcome to the forum.
Whereabouts in Spain are you based?

Those are the later ones, post 1991, with the speed sensor mounted midway in the cable.
If they were found from the part number, then the supplied one is incorrect.

The one linked to in Anxos' post is the upper cable, which is the same for early and late lower cables, due to the speed sensor moving location.

Thank you all for your replies!
It seems that in fact there is no way of finding one... I will try what Dieselman suggested about contacting a local speedometer cable supplier, though it is the first time I've ever heard that term.
I'm from the Northwestern Spain, good food and beaches but bad weather.

Yes, you do get the rain (and water), especially in Galicia!
If stuck for a cable-maker in Spain, a recommended one in UK is Speedy Cables, in south Wales.

Some of the illustrations in parts ads are generic, not of the actual part, so might be worth checking out that SIEM one.

Yep, I will contact them tomorrow, thanks!

And yes, you got it right, it rains a lot here, but this year temperatures have rised quite a lot, it is quite tropical over here right now.

All the cables under the p/n 96166554 show as being the later type.
I suspect dealers were told to exchange any early ones for a layer type if failure occurred.

Another option would be to convert the car to use the later cable and speed sensor, or to electronic speedo, but still an original, 2 wire, hall effect speed sensor, would still be required for the Hydractive...assuming this car is hydractive equipped.

A classic motorcycle/scooter shop maybe able to make one up for you, while you wait.

Hello Anxo, my 89 car is the same engine as yours. I too needed a new cable and sent them to Speedy Cables. Even though they were sent in the same box they lost one half of the cable, eventually made them up and returned to me. The two halves would not connect and I had to return them, it took them an age to remake them, and when returned they were in a poor state. Took two months for the return of my cables and six months for compensation. I could have just been unlucky but I won't use them again.
