Re: ct turbo timing problem
Seems very odd. The only possibility I can think of is that either the crankshaft pulley or camshaft sprocket are in the wrong position relative to the shafts - what else is there?
Never try to start an engine on which the cam belt has been off without turning it a complete revelolution by hand first.

Re: ct turbo timing problem
I thought the petrol engines were timed up as a result of the crank pulley keyway ligning up with the marker, not by using the dowel in flywheel method.
If pistons 1+4 are at TDC then valves on either 1+4 will be closed and the opposite valves will be 'on the rock'. As long as you can achieve that situation with the cam locking pin then it should be correct.
For the cam to have a valve open on No1 you must be using the wrong locking hole or maybe the sprocket is on reversed.

Re: ct turbo timing problem
Hi Spliffy, sorry to hear of your disaster; I'm afraid I can't offer any advice as you seem to have done everything right - unless the camshaft to camshaft sprocket alignment is wrong.
Have you tried the French Car Forum? They have lots of very knowledgeable Xantia owners who I'm sure will be able to help.

Re: ct turbo timing problem
Hi Spliffy
The Turbo Petrol XU can be pinned from the flywheel and crank pulley if its a manual or from the crank pulley only if its auto, i always prefer to remove the crank pulley to time the bottom end up as you dont run the risk of being fooled by a sliped pulley or missing the timming hole in the block, the pulley has to come off to remove the bottom cam belt cover anyway.
The head seems to be locked in the right place with pot 4's inlet open but you should not have any pistons at TDC with the crank pinned.
Does your timing setup look the same as the one in the self help section of this forum? it would be handy to see a photo of the belt end of the engine with the crank pulley and bottom cover off just to make sure the locking points are the same, have you had a replacement head or block?

Re: ct turbo timing problem
dean in answer to your last post the timing marks match exactly as whats in the photos and yes i have a head ready to go back on but cant do much till i resolve the timing issue as i say the crank is pinned thru crank pulley onto block ,on the block there are two square lugs pin goes between about 1 or 2 o clock, on the cam the timing hole is at the backside of head about 2 inches below top of head about 10 o clock photos will follow dean asap cheers

Re: ct turbo timing problem
Ok that will help, the cam sounds fine but the crank pin should go at about 11 to 12o'clock so either late xu's had different timing points, which is unlikely or your pully has slipped, a good photo should clear things up, with your crank pinned at 1 or 2 o'clock i would say that would bring 1 and 4 to tdc ish as you say, it doesnt sound right to me, iw ill have a look at my spare turbo lump tomorrow on the way back from work to be 100%.

Re: ct turbo timing problem sorted now cheers
i got hold of a crank pulley off a 205 gti (solid type) the holes on my shock type pulley (the one with a rubber band in the middle) were a mile out so everyone be aware and remember dont trust a shock type pulley thanks for all your imput see this for more info http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... hp?t=29166
