New Owner (Soon) S2 2.0 SX

Post by Kemlo » Fri Oct 01, 2021 11:29 pm

Joined today as I have agreed to buy an S2 SX. Wanted one for a long time, so I'm really hoping this comes off. My old man had and S1 on a G plate, I recall thinking it looked like a spaceship!

I've broken every single rule as the car is a 7hr drive away so can't realistically have a look. Keeping everything crossed.

Had a good long chat with the owner, went through MOT history... What could go wrong... Right? So agreed to buy and bought the flights to go collect it... :o

It's a 98 car with 140k (fsh up to around 120k). It's in reasonable shape, but bonnet and roof will need a respray I think based on pics. A couple of other niggles, but hopefully quick fixes.

I'll have a good trawl through forums for info, but if anyone is Yorkshire based & can recommend a specialist that'd be handy. I have a great local garage that I'm sure will be up to most jobs, but suspect the knowledge of a specialist will save some pain in the long run.

I'll share some more info and pics once I have the car collected and at home.

This sounds like a real adventure in the making.

I hope you are flying South to fetch the car, as rust is the killer for Xm's, so the highly salted Scottish roads don't help.
Most of the body stays in good shape, but they have some rot prone areas.

With Xm's, if it starts, stops, isn't falling in half with rust, then it's worth saving.
Being able to pass an Mot test is a real bonus.

A local garage should be able to look after the car, they are sometimes awkward to work on, the hydraulics are different to any other car, but it's just hydraulics and some pretty straightforward electronics.
A 2.0 petrol is the easiest engine configuration to work on.
The trick is to think how the car was put together, these cars were built by machines and are modular.
All the mechanicals and drivetrain was built as a separate unit and posted into the body from underneath, as one unit.
This makes access to some items very difficult, until one thinks to lower the subframe, then its easy.

Good tips. Thanks.

Car is from the south, and according to History, photos and chat with owner is rust free. But will check once I have it home!

The price of the flight would have you think so... £37 to fly to Newquay, in a bit over an hour. Vs £150+ & 11hrs by land!

I'll bo on the other threads soon enough looking for tips and parts once I have it home. First job is to get under it and have a look round, then get the stereo and blower fan both working before it goes for bonnet and roof to be resprayed. 😎

New car day can't come soon enough.
