I agree with dieselman that the Etoile ‘loys suit the car best out of all the Series 2 offerings, I know this is a very subjective thing but there’s something about the early Italias that somehow suits the XM’s unique looks… Might try a set and see, always have the option to turn them into luxury coffee tables. Any takers…? :)

I guess the td autobox never had a fluid change...

We have an M reg S2 2.1td auto.. 262k the autobox finally packed up however we decided to replace it as we loved the car too much.. Happy to say she's going forward nicely again now. There's a blog on the work by me on here in members cars..

I can’t remember now tbh. Not long after I got it the head gasket gave out (I think there were a batch of duff ones) but that never gave any probs after. It was also plagued by sticky hydraulic tappets intermittently for a while but I was always scrupulous with oil changes and used Millers semi- synthetic in it. Looking back maybe I should have had the ‘box done but at the time I didn’t want to funnel so much money into it given its mileage (and I guess over 20 years on we cherish these a lot more…!)

Just read through your gearbox blog- hats off to you! Glad to hear all that hard work paid off and she’s running smoothly. My wagon is still in bits pending the heater fan conundrum being resolved, I’m eager to get it back and get going on its myriad cosmetic issues and summon up the courage to deal with…sunroofgeddon.

The delay in time due to a health change over speed of getting it done...

Good morning to all on a rather drab rainy day. Update on the wagon; heating system finally resolved and working. The main problem was repairing prevous cack-handed bodgery that had seen someone try and “repair” the fan (and bugger it up in the process) sidestep the main control panel by fitting some kind of extra knob under the dash etc…
While everything was out the matrix was cleaned out, wiring repaired and a working control panel fitted. I ended up getting a LHD (new) motor/ fan cage assembly from abroad and getting it rewired to reverse the polarity so that it turned the correct way… everything went together nicely, with new dash bulbs for good measure.
Given the interior a deep clean with the steamer (very satisfying to see decades of crud coming off), aiming to shampoo the carpets and seats (with the seats out) on a sunny few days. Made an enclosure grille covered in speaker fabric for the side- mounted boot sub (part of the HiFi upgrade..).
My real focus is to try and restore the paintwork as best I can next- a few areas will need to be flatted back, prepped, primered,base-coated and lacquered, in other areas the lacquer is just very finely crazed so I will see if I can locally just blend new lacquer in and then finally machine polish the whole car before sealing the paint to protect it.
Making a list of broken/ manky/ missing trim bits (exterior mainly) to try and track down to complete it. I’d like to pop over to Brittany soon for a break so may pop into a few scrapyards to see if there’s anything left XM-wise.. I figure that as they built them at Rennes, given the way that in many Car plant cities many management/ workers drive what is made there and it all filters down to the wider market there might be a better chance of success there. We shall see!

Bear in mind I think the fins are opposite way on lhd blower motors. But the transister board may work on your rhd blower motor unit.

But if it works well done.
