Hi all. I am considering buying a 1994 2.0 132Hp petrol-LPG XM with automatic gearbox and 460 000km. It looks good on a pictures and the price is decent. I am here to find more info about the model and common problems. I know it is an old car, I know it has high mileage, I know that everything may be for overhaul but I am thinking if the mileage is that high, it passed MOT two months ago and serviced before that, maybe it is a decent car. Cheers ;)

Hello

Rust in the sills (rockers) especially the jacking points/lower wing areas and suspension pipe work................ needs checking

As above, rust in the sills and chassis rails at the rear subframe mounts and rear of the front wheel housings.
Front suspension strut tops can fail due to rusty base-plate, or rubber tearing, or delamination.
They can be replaced, or refurbished.

460,000km is a lot of use for a petrol engine and gearbox, but as long as you check it over properly, it should be fine.

The hydraulics would be Ok, barring, possibly rusty pipes where they turn up in front of the rear subframe and maybe rear brake calliper feeds.

Xm are very durable and can cover huge mileages.

If it's cheap and not rusty, it's probably worth buying, unless you can obtain a better example for not much more money.

Possibly a lucky escape. The 4hp18 autobox is fine for milage so long as important fluid changes have been done every 10,000khms or so. I've had Facebook disagreements with European owners who have put dex 3 4 or even 6 or what ever the later ones are in the box and they have been OK. But I try to specify dex2 only which or was designed for only...

I've had a 4hp18 box. Fail at 421,000 khms and that had regular fluid changes on it with dex2 only. So I'd say it was getting close to its life end..

The add come up again :-) Any ideas how much gearbox rebuild costs? I know it is not a chep fix or DIY job. The exterior of the car is not promising, however the interior is looking quite well and preserved. I will contact the seller/owner and try to discover something more about the car. They are rear in my country and if it is a bit decent car it will be good buy not for daily driver but for revival in the future.

A gearbox rebuild will cost about £1600 plus removal and refitting, maybe more.
The crushed front jacking points indicate a weakness, which is usually the jacking point has rusted inside the sill.

If I were you, I would widen my search area, there are number for sale in Austria, Romania, Serbia, Greece that would be better value than a 460,000 Km, car.
With an XM, it's worth checking that it has Hydractive fitted. If not, it is just a regular hydro-pneumatic Citroen.

All UK Xm had Hydractive, but not all Worldwide supplied ones, it ws an optional extra.

That was also my opinion, just needed confirmation....seems like endless money pit. Not sure how is "in person" but still. Will look elsewhere. Thanks!
