New member with a problem

Hi I'm Paschal living in Ireland, owner of many Citroen cars in various states of repair.
2 non runner CX's, a good DS, and 3 XM's 1991 2.1 td, 1995 2.1td exclusive auto and my favourite a 1998 2.5 td exclusive which I drive every day.
Well used to. It's developed a really weird problem that looks like fuel starvation. It started off as a reluctance to start in the mornings, then any time now it even looses power -like a flat spot - and will even stall when idling sometimes...... and it's not really consistent. I've tried all the usual suspects including replacement of the fuel filter housing. Could the fuel pump (Bosch VP36) be the problem? any help would be very greatly appreciated

Welcome to the club

We have several experts on 2.5s who will I'm sure will be along shortly, very nice cars but one of the reasons I like 2.1s is that you don't get these strange electronic faults, the mechanical pumps seem to go on forever.

I live near Newry. I'm afraid I'm not able to help you with the 2.5, and echo Peter's comments on the 2.1s.

Before going too deep insert a clear fuel pipe in the pipe run just before the injection pump and check for air bubbles.

Hi Paschal

There are two other regular air in fuel points on a 2.5TD.
The metal fuel pipes come up the engine bay bulkhead drivers side behind the engine where they change to flexible rubber pipes to come over the top of the engine. This rubber pipe splits just above the joint with the steel. Usually a very small split bulkhead side of the pipe.
The other one is the fuel heater on the end of the engine goes porus. Usual fix is to bypass the heater. Very late 2.5's got an electric heater in the fuel filter so even Citroen noticed this particular problem.

Also another thread showing the two type's of 2.5's fuel pipes between the fuel filter and pump (including the early thermal fuel heater [#22] and the later models [#19] which was electrical) WITHIN this 2.1 TD thread may be of help !

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Thank you for your warm welcome. Yes the 2.1 is a fine and rewarding car and so reliable. However I must say that my 2.5s (I'm on my second) have been largely problem free except for the fuel heater by pass which is common to the 2.1 and indeed BX diesels too. Maybe I've just been lucky. I live near Trim in county Meath - come and see our wonderful Norman castle ! Aah Newry - former mecca for the southern shoppers! I frequently get to work in Dundalk which is good. Thanks too for the prompt - I shall prepare my longest pliers and hope for the best.

Thanks for the tip. Spot on! little cracks in the supply line opening to make a big hole when bent and about 10mm from the end.
Happy days. Passed a '98 2.5 this morning. Broke down - overheating - possibly something to do with the HT on the trailer it was towing.
OK i probably would have stopped anyway just to drool but I was able to help. That does make all the other XM's in the ring run a little sweeter.....does'nt it?
Anyway thanks again. Hope I can return the favour sometime. By the way the CX's are a Mk1 2.5IE and a Mk2 2.0RE Familiale with dropped liners and its donor which is a crashed 2.2RS awaiting engine removal.

CX's are a car that I know virtually nothing about.
Must have a look through the workshop manuals one day.

Glad to hear you got sort out in the end.

You have a good selection CXs there as well. I have 2 at the moment, going to become 1, and even more spares shortly!
