Hi all,
I'm John from south wales. have owned a couple of GS's, 3 CX's a BX and 3 xantia's, so have a certain affinity with the citroen marque. I have the chance of an XM of around 94 vintage but there is no keypad code for it. and I have been told is suffering from the dreaded red / green light problem and of course will not start. It is petrol but I do not yet know the model, will hopefully get the log book next week. It has been dry stored in a museum for the last 10 years and is apparently in good order. My question is can anyone supply an engine ECU with code to try on the vehicle in order to rule out any wiring faults. The vehicle is approx 80 miles away and I cannot get to it for a couple of weeks. I would dearly like to save this vehicle if at all possible. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

Hi And welcome to the forum

I would imagine its a 2.0 Turbo with an auto box? there may well be someone near by who can help you out but you will need to know exactly what engine is in it of course.
Good luck with your new purchase anyway.

Thanks for the welcome Dean,
I will post model details as soon as I get them, all I know at moment is it is maroon in colour and I've been told that all electrical ancilliaries work
( yeh right) with exception of engine start ( I should be so lucky )'
Still we live in hope.
Kind regards
John

being a 94 vintage it will be very reliable, these were MK1.5's so they have the charm aand good looks of the MK1 with none of the electrical hassle, also if its just the right age you dont get the useless MK2 window mechanism's that drop the glass into the bowls of the door

Hi and welcome to the club

Can't help you with your problem I'm afraid, diesel man myself and none of mine have keypads :D I ran CXs for about 10 years, the last one a CX25 DTR turbo Safari I covered over 150,000 miles in, fantastic car, I have run XMs for about fourteen years since then but they are getting very thin on the ground now, at least 2.1 manual estates are, have also had several BXs and a ZX. I'm sure someone will be able to sort you out.

Hi John and welcome,
I hope you can get someone to help you with your ECU/keypad problem, I'm sorry I can not help out I only run 2.5 TD's !

BTW I see your first post was made today " Fri Nov 19, 2010 8:18 pm " but when you check the details out in the right box of your posts "Joined: Sat Jan 01, 2000 8:35 am" which was even before the Forum was born :?

Don't worry, this is probably due to when Ciarán who hosts the Forum, server went down (Due to power cuts), which may have been at a similar time whilst you were actually joining up

I'm sure Ciarán will be along shortly to sort this anomaly out !

:)

Hi John

First search any documentation to see if any 4 digit codes have been written down.
If you find anything to try then use a little patience. Do not try more than 2 codes at a time.
This is because 3 wrong codes in succession locks the immobiliser.
Depending on PSA immobiliser version the lock up can be for a limited time or permanent.
For 1994 models lock up could be 30 mins (Mk1 XM) or 1 hour (early Mk2 XM).
Code attempts during this lock out time will fail even if the correct code is used.
Try any listed codes found.
XM owners manuals are stored in the fuse box lid under the passenger dash.
As new there is a plastic card (credit card size) that the dealer should write start, radio, key and remote codes on.
May actually still be there sat waiting for you to find.
The next codes to try are the Citroen Garage codes.
Early cars this code was 0001 but changed around 1994 to 1111.
Once these easy checks are done it is best to check that the problem is just an immobiliser one.
To do that post details on here of your actual model and age of XM.
We need model description, engine type and ORGA number (found on passenger door pillar).
See if you can find a club member with a working similar model/age car that is willing to meet for a temporary ECU swap.
Codes are stored in the ECU so if the temporary ECU is put in your car and its own code used you should get a green and try starting.
If it starts you at least know the code and ECU are all that is needed to get your car running.

If you can't find the code then buy another ECU cheaply or send the ECU off to be coded.

Hi all,

Thanks for prompt and imformative replies, I've been a motor engineer in road haulage for some 45 years and (Rob), the handle (rederv) has stuck with me for some time. I do have a soft spot for diesels but this motor is hopefully too good to pass up.
Time will tell, if it is a basket case then it will probably yield some spare parts for the forum members. By the way a local auto specialist says he can decode (as in wipe the code completely) for £80.00 as a last resort.

Regards all

John
