New to forum West counrty XM VSX 2.1 Turbo

Post by Thunderace » Wed Jul 18, 2012 9:25 am

Hi great forum,
I bought the red estate which was on E bay a week or two back in Weymouth,
I figured when I was bidding on it that it would need a few little things,
and so far thanks to some very quick response on your forum's technical section,
and the wealth of stuff in previous threads,
I seem to be coping ok
( my latest is the aux belt dynamic tension-er, usual thing needle rollers have failed and chewed up the pivot shaft )

I have owned a few Citroen's previously, had a string of BX's
really fell in love with the Turbo version,
great car, it went anywhere, it would pull anything, carry anything, and empty would embarrass the local boy racers through the lanes here.

Locally Lord Bath has an XM Turbo which I have driven a few times,
his is a left-hand drive personal import, and some minor stuff seems to be slightly different to UK spec models I have looked at.

So of course I had to have one for a giggle,
Admittedly since driving the thing home over a week ago,
it has been immobile with various minor problems,
but yeah, got one.

Need to get a tow bar on there too,
though reading bits on this forum, no one seems to rate the 2.1 Turbo for towing when coupled via the autobox.

2.1 Auto is fine for towing. Depends what you want to tow, and how heavy it is. The 2.1 Auto is a bit on the underpowered side, but it is adequate. And towing with the autobox is very agreeable.

I had kind of hoped it would manage a little trailer grossing 750 to 1000kgs,
I towed one of those big Ifford Williams transporters with another vehicle on-board,
and one time a horse box with the little BX,
but I have just built a new lighter transport trailer,
so not expecting the XM to drag a monster caravan or anything which should bother it.

it'll manage one of those - I pulled an XK150S DHC on a car transporter behind my BX 19RD

Good grief the XM 2.1 Turbo makes what slightly more than double the torque of the normally aspirated XUD9,
so we should be able to drag anything smaller than a truck ?
Exactly how big or too heavy do we have to go before it's an issue pulling with the XM ?

It'll tow plenty more than is legal to tow with it. Heaviest I have towed with a 2.1 Auto is a 2.5 XM estate on a tandem axle car transporter trailer. It towed it fine.

Oh I fully don't expect to be towing any greater weight than I did with the BX,
and the most that was ever pulling would have been maybe up round two tons.
Latest transporter is built lighter with a lower load height, so probably only looking at only a single ton.
For now I am getting up courage to re-fit the now non-dynamic aux belt tensioner .
